As a seasoned horror gaming aficionado who’s been through my fair share of spine-chilling adventures, I can’t help but feel a thrill of anticipation upon hearing about Bloober Team’s upcoming project, Cronos: The New Dawn. Having immersed myself in the haunting world of Silent Hill 2 and witnessed the breathtaking reimagining of that classic, I’m now eagerly awaiting to see how they blend elements from other horror franchises such as Resident Evil and Dead Space into their unique style.
Following the outstanding achievement of the remake for Silent Hill 2, everyone is eagerly awaiting what developer Bloober Team will unveil next, and it won’t be too long before their upcoming project graces our screens. Announced earlier this year, Cronos: The New Dawn is a fresh sci-fi survival horror intellectual property from Bloober Team, set to release next year. Interestingly, the developers are positioning it as more akin to a Resident Evil-style survival horror experience rather than Silent Hill, which the studio has previously worked on extensively.
The same was confirmed by game director and producer Jacek Zięba in an interview with GamingBolt. When asked about what players can expect from Cronos: The New Dawn’s combat, Zięba drew comparisons to Capom’s horror series, in particular mentioning the combat mechanics of the Resident Evil remakes as being a point of reference for Bloober Team.
In terms of combat style, Cronos leans more towards the action-horror genre of Resident Evil rather than the psychological horror of Silent Hill according to Zięba. The recent Resident Evil remakes demonstrate how to effectively blend classic designs with contemporary technology and gaming norms. Each remake offers a unique take on the formula, allowing for exploration of various creative avenues. This diverse body of work provides a rich source of inspiration for creating something that is both familiar and fresh for players.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to say that Resident Evil isn’t the only horror series that’s left its mark on Cronos: The New Dawn’s combat style. This year, Zięba hinted at a core combat mechanic reminiscent of Dead Space’s dismemberment and Alan Wake’s flashlight, but hasn’t fully unveiled it yet. Dive deeper into that here.
Apart from sharing details about Cronos: The New Dawn with GamingBolt, Zięba also disclosed some aspects where the game draws inspiration from Resident Evil. Specifically, when asked about the design of its levels in the sci-fi horror game, he mentioned that it resembles Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 at times, with a hint of Dark Souls influence. He further explained that players can anticipate navigating through labyrinthine levels that offer ample opportunities for exploration and backtracking.
The game titled “Cronos: The New Dawn” is set to release in the year 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and personal computers (PC). Keep an eye out as our interview with Zięba will be published soon!
