Sony Becomes Kadokawa’s Biggest Shareholder As Companies Form Alliance

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the recent alliance between Sony and Kadokawa. Having grown up playing some of FromSoftware’s most iconic games like Demon’s Souls and Bloodborne on my trusty PlayStation, it’s heartening to see the strengthening of ties between these two titans of the gaming world.

It appears that Sony won’t directly purchase Kadokawa Corporation. Instead, they’ve announced a strategic partnership involving capital and business collaboration, making Sony the largest shareholder in Kadokawa Corporation.

On January 7th, Sony is set to acquire approximately 12 million new shares in the company at a cost of ¥50 billion, or roughly $320 million. Previously, it held a 2% ownership stake.

In simpler terms, the announcement states that following the purchase of additional shares, Sony is now set to be Kadokawa’s biggest shareholder, owning around 10% of their total shares, which includes the stocks Sony had obtained back in February 2021.

The correspondence continues that the tightened relationship will “maximise both companies’ IP value globally and facilitate wider and deeper collaboration, such as potential joint investments in the content field, joint discovery of new creators, and joint promotion of further media mixes of both companies’ IP”.

In the future, these two companies aim to explore joint projects, including transforming Kadokawa’s intellectual properties into live-action films and international TV dramas, co-producing anime works, widening the global distribution of Kadokawa’s anime productions through the Sony Group, increasing publication of Kadokawa’s video games, and cultivating human resources for promoting and expanding virtual production.

It appears that, given the limited information available so far, this development could be advantageous for all parties. Kadokawa retains its independence and ownership, yet strengthens its bond with Sony, a partnership that may facilitate reaching their individual objectives more effectively.

In this partnership with Kadokawa, we will acquire a majority stake. Kadokawa is known for producing a vast array of Intellectual Properties (IP), such as novels, comics, games, and anime. Sony’s CEO, Hiroki Totoki, announced that by combining Kadokawa’s rich IP and IP creation environment with Sony’s global entertainment expansion strengths in areas like anime and games, we aim to collaborate closely to achieve Kadokawa’s ‘Global Media Mix’ strategy, which aims to maximize the worth of their IP, and Sony’s long-term goal, ‘Creative Entertainment Vision’.

Speaking about Takeshi Natsuno, Kadokawa’s top executive, he stated: “We firmly believe that this collaboration will significantly boost the worth of our intellectual properties and enhance our overall corporate value over the medium to long term. Our goal is to put in our best efforts to make certain that our joint endeavors with Sony yield impressive outcomes on a global scale.

Who Is Kadokawa?

Kadokawa Corporation is a significant player in Japan’s multimedia industry, with diverse investments across various sectors. Mainly recognized for its dominance in the comic and light novel market, it also holds the rights to numerous influential intellectual properties.

As a fervent admirer, I’d like to highlight that among its various branches, there are game creators such as Spike Chunsoft and Acquire. However, it’s the exceptional talent of FromSoftware, the mastermind behind Elden Ring, that truly steals the show in their gaming division.

Why Does Sony Want to Strengthen Its Relationship with Kadokawa?

Over time, Sony is most recognized for its electronic products. However, more recently, the company has been subtly shifting its focus towards the entertainment industry, boasting divisions such as Sony Pictures Entertainment, Sony Music Entertainment, and Sony Interactive Entertainment as key players in this new direction.

The business has heavily invested in the continually growing fandom of anime by acquiring streaming platforms such as Crunchyroll and Funimation. However, it’s expressed concerns about not having enough original intellectual properties (IP). This partnership with Kadokawa will grant it access to a vast library of content.

Will FromSoftware Start Making Exclusives for PS5?

It’s crucial to bear in mind that FromSoftware has maintained a lengthy and robust partnership with PlayStation, and Sony has been instrumental in publishing several of the studio’s groundbreaking titles such as Demon’s Souls and Bloodborne.

Moving on, it’s hard to foresee significant changes given the situation. Sony might acquire a majority stake in Kadokawa, yet they currently hold just a 10% share.

In the future, game titles might receive increased promotion on PlayStation 5, and there’s a hint that Sony could potentially publish more games from Kadokawa. However, we don’t expect any sudden exclusivity changes, and it seems that FromSoftware will continue with their usual operations for the time being.
