As a seasoned software engineer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the introduction of GitHub Copilot Free by Microsoft is indeed a game-changer. Coming from a time when we had to painstakingly write code line by line, the autocompletion and code suggestion features of Copilot have been a godsend.
As a tech enthusiast, I can’t help but appreciate GitHub as the undisputed giant among platforms for coders. Back in 2018, Microsoft took over this web-based powerhouse and has since transformed it with some pretty cool features aimed at boosting its capabilities. One of these game-changers is the integration of Copilot, a tool that’s taking collaboration on code to new heights!
GitHub Copilot has been widely appreciated by developers thanks to its distinctive interface offering AI-powered code suggestions across languages like JavaScript, Python, and TypeScript, as well as auto-completion features. Notably, this service was initially available only for premium users, which could set one back up to $39 a month.
Microsoft has recently rolled out a new, complimentary version of their service called GitHub Copilot Free. This free plan caters to infrequent users by providing them with a broader range of features that they may not require on a daily basis.
It’s worth noting that the service’s capabilities are fairly limited. For instance, the free plan (integrated into VS Code) allows access to 2,000 completions/month, 50 messages/month, Copilot Chat in GitHub, and Block suggestions matching public code. However, you need a GitHub account to access the free plan.
In the free version, you get to utilize either Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet or OpenAI’s GPT-40 model. These advanced tools are capable of explaining code and detecting potential errors, as stated by Microsoft.
Option: You have the ability to make changes across several files simultaneously. Additionally, you can utilize Copilot’s external assistance agents or even create your own extension for additional functionality. (Paraphrased)
After introducing their latest free plan, Microsoft has made it clear that the unlimited Copilot Pro accounts for students, educators, and open-source contributors will carry on functioning without interruption and remain unaffected by this change. Additionally, Microsoft revealed that GitHub now boasts over 150 million developers.
