I’ve been following the careers of Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and Edi Gathegi for years, so seeing them step into these iconic roles is a dream come true.
Previously, in July, enthusiasm among DC fans escalated when James Gunn’s Superman project officially unveiled Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern. However, since then, specific insights about the heroes’ roles in the movie have been scarce, leaving fans eagerly anticipating any updates. Now, their wait has ended! We’ve finally got our first glimpse of these characters in the trailer for Superman — and fans are definitely going to enjoy it.
In the latest sneak peek for the new Superman movie, viewers catch glimpses of characters like Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, and Guy Gardner. Though these scenes are short, they provide an exciting glimpse, especially regarding Guy Gardner. The trailer suggests that he sports his traditional bowl-cut hairstyle and is shown wielding his Green Lantern ring, hinting that these three legendary figures will likely play significant roles beyond brief appearances, a detail director James Gunn previously confirmed to ComicBook.
Gunn stated that each character gets their chance to shine. They’re not just passing appearances; they are integral characters. Mister Terrific, however, is the central character among them, as he plays a significant role in the storyline. Working with Nathan and putting him in a comical outfit was enjoyable. I’ve long admired Isabela’s work too. The challenge was to find the right balance between all these characters.
Initially viewing Hawkgirl provides confirmation of the tough, unique appearance hinted at earlier by Merced. This past summer, Merced disclosed her character’s attire in the film would be a “badass” suit and helmet, emphasizing that it is tailored to the narrative.
Merced commented, “Indeed, some images have appeared online.” He continued, “I believe James has a clear vision for his character, and this particular suit aligns with the narrative’s timeline in the story. As for additional information, I’m not sure what more to share, but let me emphasize, the helmet is just fantastic! It’s incredible. It’s utterly cool.
However, regarding the portrayal of Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and Guy Gardner on screen, enthusiasts must exercise patience until July, as they won’t get a full glimpse of these characters in action yet. Previously, Fillion has given hints about his take on the character.
In essence, Fillion pointed out that everyone, regardless of their circumstances or qualities, possesses imperfections. We all have peculiarities and weaknesses. Even if someone has an ideal family, there could still be issues like, “Oh, my goodness, my dad drives me crazy with this one habit.” Everyone has something, and I find it intriguing to explore these shortcomings and flaws. This authenticity is what helps people connect, as we all share such experiences. Guy Gardner, being 90% flawed, offers a fantastic opportunity for exploration – his disregard for his flaws being one of them. I believe there’s a sense of liberation in portraying such characters. As someone who enjoys playing imperfect individuals, Guy Gardner is an ideal choice.

Even though there are many uncertainties regarding the content of the upcoming Superman movie, it’s been made clear by Gunn that this film won’t be an origin story. He clarified on social media that he’s not re-telling the origins of Superman or other significant heroes because those stories are already widely known to people.
“I won’t repeat Batman and Superman’s backstories since they are widely known. Also, please don’t relegate Swamp Thing to the sidelines. We’ve announced a project involving him, and he is one of the most renowned DC characters with an impressive collection of comics, films, and TV shows, a group that only a few DC heroes can claim.
The movie Superman narrates Superman’s tale of reconciling his Kryptonian roots with his human upbringing as Clark Kent from Smallville, Kansas. He is the personification of truth, justice, and the values cherished in America, all guided by human compassion in a world that often finds kindness outdated.
