As a critic who has been through numerous holiday seasons and countless films, I must say that Nativity! stands out as a heartwarming gem among the plethora of Christmas fare. With its charming cast, led by the ever-reliable Martin Freeman, and a story that manages to both poke fun at and celebrate the spirit of the season, it’s a film that never fails to bring a smile to my face.
This upcoming Christmas will be the fifteenth anniversary of when the musical comedy “Nativity!” featuring Martin Freeman premiered, winning over viewers with its heartwarming acting, amusing plot, and memorable soundtrack.
In 2009, a film focuses on Paul (played by Martin Freeman), a primary school teacher, who finds himself in charge of creating the annual Christmas play, despite his lack of holiday spirit.
Instead of saying “When he lies to a rival primary school teacher that a Hollywood producer will be attending the show, things get complicated and Paul needs to figure out how to clean up the mess,” you could also say “Lying to a competing elementary school teacher about a Hollywood producer watching their performance causes trouble for Paul, who has to find a solution to the ensuing chaos.” Both versions convey the same idea in easy-to-read language.
In addition to Freeman, Pam Ferris from Call the Midwife, Ashley Jensen from Shetland, and Alan Carr are among the stars featured in the film’s cast.
Reflecting on the continuous appeal of my film during an interview with the BBC in November, I shared: “With it being available on Netflix annually for Christmas viewing and frequently aired on the BBC, it seems to continually discover fresh fans.
She mentioned that the concept for the movie originated when she attended her daughter’s nativity play. She found herself thinking: “This would be fantastic for a movie, as the kids were absolutely hilarious.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the extraordinary journey of that initial masterpiece I had the pleasure of witnessing. It was an unprecedented triumph that paved the way for not one, not two, but three captivating sequels – all brainchild and vision of Isitt.
She said she adores them all, but the original will likely remain special to her.
