As a lifelong fan of both Superman and Dragon Ball Z, I can’t help but feel a strange sense of nostalgia as I witness the latest teaser trailer for the new DCU film. The similarities between Superman’s downed state and Yamcha’s infamous battle against the Saibamen are uncanny, and it’s hard not to chuckle at the irony. It seems that even in a different universe, our desolate desert bandit still manages to find a way to make an impact.
The character of Superman, or Man of Steel, is soaring high due to James Gunn and Warner Bros’ creative team releasing the debut trailer for the upcoming movie that will launch the new DC Universe next year. In this latest Superman sneak peek, audiences get a glimpse of the fresh interpretation of the Last Son of Krypton, accompanied by some well-known DC comic book characters like Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, and Metamorpho. Among the numerous new heroes showcased, one of the most notable is Clark Kent’s powerful canine companion, Krypto. Fans of anime are joining the excitement as they recall a humorous meme from Dragon Ball Z featuring a certain ex-desert outlaw.
In the newest trailer for Superman, we find Kal-El in a weakened state, apparently knocked unconscious in the Arctic and having difficulty standing up. Even though he’s invincible, something or someone has managed to bring down the Man of Steel, leaving him bloodied and bruised, unable to ascend to the heavens, let alone stand on his own. Fortunately, Superman will have a new companion for the upcoming movie, Krypto the Super Dog, who is set to make his big-screen debut. Kal-El’s battered appearance recalls Yamcha’s most iconic moment from Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Saga, and anime enthusiasts have definitely picked up on it.

The Yamcha of Steel
Fans of Dragon Ball Z quickly noticed that the depiction of Superman being defeated bore a striking resemblance to the fate that Yamcha experienced during his fight against the Saibamen. Unlike Yamcha, who managed to defeat the plant-like creature in their initial encounter, the henchmen of Vegeta and Nappa chose to sacrifice themselves to ensure that the Z-Fighters remained defeated. This scene has been a popular topic for memes even decades after its first appearance in the original manga and anime series. The “Yamcha meme” continues to resurface on social media platforms, as evident with the release of James Gunn’s Superman trailer.

The Saibamen Are Eating Good
Interestingly enough, the Saibamen have surprisingly resurfaced recently due to the happenings in Dragon Ball Daima. As Goku and his Z-Warrior team delve into the Demon Realm to reverse a wish that turned them all into kids, a new antagonist, Dr. Anisu, has emerged. This new villain has produced a Majin named Kuu, who is formidable because DNA from Majin Buu was used in his creation and samples of Majin Buu were employed to strengthen him.
In classic Akira Toriyama style, things aren’t always as they appear. Majin Kuu, unlike his powerful predecessor, isn’t a force to be reckoned with. The fusion of Saibaman failed to inflict any damage on one of the Tamagami, and in a comical twist, conceded defeat. With Dr. Anisu unable to obtain a Dragon Ball, it seems she will have to find another way to achieve her enigmatic objectives.
Regrettably, Yamcha enthusiasts haven’t seen much of him in “Dragon Ball Daima,” but if the Dragon Ball Super franchise chooses to continue, there’s a chance he could step into the limelight again. In the Moro Arc, Yamcha has a fantastic chance to stand out as he battles the antagonist’s forces, and it would be exciting to watch this unfold if the series returns.
