Random: Former IGN China EIC Refutes Game Science Crying Claim

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades under my belt, I’ve seen it all – from tears of joy when beating a notoriously difficult boss, to tears of frustration when said boss decides to make a sudden comeback. So, when I heard about the alleged emotional outburst at The Game Awards, I was intrigued.

On Monday, following the exhilaration of The Game Awards, we hinted at an intense incident that reportedly happened among the audience. Alanah Pearce, a former writer for IGN and Sony Santa Monica, claims she witnessed at least one Game Science team member showing profound emotion and visibly crying. This occurred after Astro Bot won the Game of the Year award, which was originally intended for Black Myth: Wukong.

It wasn’t necessarily anticipated that there would be an update regarding this particular story. However, Charles Young, the former editor-in-chief of IGN China, responded to a viral video featuring Pearce on X and made the situation more intense by stating: “During those days, I was with the Game Science team the entire time, including the TGA night. No one shed tears over this. In fact, I didn’t even see anyone crying at the event.” As expected, the comments have become quite chaotic, and Young’s defense of Game Science has led to a Community Note, which is quite significant on X.

For the sake of upholding journalistic honesty, we don’t attempt to influence any dispute unfairly. However, if Young was positioned similarly to Pearce, it means he likely saw host Geoff Keighley become visibly emotional (allegedly) in front of over 150 million viewers, moved by the possibility of an Okami sequel (being a fan himself).

Did you notice if there were any emotional moments at The Game Awards that might have led to someone shedding tears nearby the stage? Please keep your responses polite and composed in the comments section below.
