As a seasoned comic book enthusiast with decades of reading under my belt, let me tell you that Tom King and Daniel Sampere’s run on Wonder Woman has been nothing short of spectacular. The latest issue, #16, has taken the narrative to new heights, unveiling the origin story of the enigmatic villain, the Sovereign.
Tom King and Daniel Sampere’s “Wonder Woman” series consistently sets new standards. In issue #14, King hinted at a significant development, and indeed, it delivered – unveiling a crucial step in the ongoing conflict between the enigmatic American ruler, the Sovereign, and Wonder Woman. Following the downfall of Amanda Waller in “Absolute Power”, the Sovereign sought to strike at Wonder Woman personally, by eliminating her long-time partner Steve Trevor. This tragic event prompted Wonder Woman to take action, dispatching the Wonder Girls on a mission to dismantle the Sovereign’s riches in issue #15.
In issue #16 penned by King and Bruno Redondo, Detective Chimp, dispatched by Wonder Woman, delves into the mystery surrounding Steve’s murder and investigates the Sovereign, ultimately exposing Henry Charles as the villain. This revelation was then shared with Clark Kent who wrote an article about the authenticity of the Sovereign. Furthermore, issue #16 includes a supplementary story from King and Khary Randolph where Jimmy Olsen creates a viral video similar to TikTok, discussing Clark’s piece and shedding light on the origin of the Sovereign as well as an intriguing tale about how he claimed his throne.
Spoilers Ahead!
The Sovereign Almost Didn’t Inherit the Throne of the United States
In his article, Clark Kent uncovered the historical truth about the Charles family. It’s revealed that they seized power by deceitfully acquiring the Lasso of Deceit from Native American tribes. They used this artifact to deceive the Founding Fathers into believing they were establishing a democracy instead of another monarchy. The Charles family, through the influence of the Lasso and their accumulated wealth as monarchs, controlled the United States subtly, shaping its course according to their desires at every opportunity.
Clark scrutinized public records from both governmental and medical institutions, discovering that the Ruler had a sibling named Claire, who currently resided in Gotham’s streets. Claire provided evidence of her identity through photographs she possessed and shared her tale with Kent. It was believed by their father that Henry would not be a suitable ruler, leading him to consider giving the crown to Claire instead, which would have broken centuries-old traditions and enraged Henry greatly. However, before this could occur, Henry acted first, murdering their father and seizing the crown from his sister, banishing her to a life of poverty and disgrace.
The Sovereign’s Origin Shows His Reasoning for Hating Women
The supplementary tale for Wonder Woman #16 delves deeper into the background of the Sovereign character, revealing how he developed his deep-seated dislike of women. This antagonistic sentiment has been evident since the start of this comic series. His hostility towards women was never hidden, as shown by his response to the story’s catalyst event – an Amazon killing a group of men in a bar – and through his mistreatment of Wonder Woman, manipulating her environment with the Lasso of Deception to make her live like a 1950s housewife. His misogyny reached its peak when his sister almost seized his throne, fueling his conflict with Wonder Woman.
In recent issues, Wonder Woman has been delivering significant plot twists, with King and Sampere at the helm. The introduction of Wonder Woman’s child, Trinity, was just the start, and the latest installment delves into her origin story. Additionally, the supplementary tale sheds light on the aftermath of the Sovereign’s riches being destroyed in Wonder Woman #15 – the disappearance of his mansions across the U.S. The main narrative prepares for Wonder Woman’s impending attack on him, as she introduces her daughter to Hippolyta and hints at a possible return for Steve Trevor.
