As a long-time follower of true crime stories and an avid supporter of justice for victims, I can’t help but feel a sense of relief and closure upon hearing the news about Richard Allen being sentenced to 130 years in prison for the brutal murders of Abigail Williams and Liberty German. The gruesome nature of these crimes has haunted me since they first made headlines, and it has been heart-wrenching to watch the families of these innocent girls suffer through five long years without answers.
Richard Allen is facing over a century behind bars.
Following the 52-year-old’s conviction for the horrific 2017 double murder of two middle school girls, Abigail Williams, 13, and Liberty German, 14, he has been given a sentence of 130 years in prison, as reported by NBC News.
In 2022, Allen was apprehended for committing a crime and stood trial for four weeks last month. The court found him guilty, resulting in a sentence that represents the utmost legal penalty. During sentencing, Judge Frances C. Gull stated that Allen’s actions were among the most heinous crimes ever committed.
Additionally, Gull showed understanding towards the families of Williams and German, remarking, “Their lives will be forever impacted by your actions.
Lawyers representing Richard Allen (who was found guilty in this case) have indicated that he intends to challenge the verdict, as stated in a sentencing memorandum they’ve provided to NBC: “Richard Allen continues to assert his innocence.
5 years following the murders of Williams and German in the small Indiana town of Delphi, Allen was first apprehended. At that time, officials stated they had “reasonable suspicion” for the arrest. The two friends, aged 13 and 14, were discovered deceased off the Monon High Bridge Trail after their parents reported them missing.
In the court proceedings, the defense team for German displayed footage from her phone taken on the day she passed away. This video allegedly showed a man, who the prosecutors believe is Allen, approaching the girls on a bridge; this individual became known as “the bridge suspect.
During the court proceedings, Carroll County Prosecutor Nick McLeland stated clearly, as reported by WTHR, “Now everything is understandable. Richard Allen is the one known as ‘the bridge guy.’ He abducted them and later took their lives. He inflicted fatal throat wounds. He robbed Abby and Libby of their youth.
Following his 2022 arrest, Allen, a previous employee at CVS, confessed that he was present at the bridge on the day of the killings involving German and Williams, but consistently refused any involvement in the crime, as reported by NBC News.
During a conversation with his wife while in prison, as evidenced by a recording presented at the trial, he admitted, “I’m responsible for Abby’s death. I not only killed Abby but also Libby.
On the phone call, Allen’s spouse expressed doubt about him, suggesting that perhaps the medication was causing some confusion or alteration in his mental state.
In addition, defense lawyer Brad Rozzi similarly linked Allen’s confessions to a “crisis of mental health,” which he believed was instigated by prolonged isolation in a maximum-security penitentiary. He questioned the resilience of any individual, stating, “How much can one person truly withstand?
Allen’s wife also told WTHR reporters after his conviction, “This isn’t over at all.”
