How Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Sets Up the Sonic 4 Movie

As a lifelong fan of Sonic, I can say that the release of Sonic 3 is pure joy and excitement wrapped into one! The teaser for Sonic 4 has left me buzzing with anticipation. I remember playing Sonic Adventure as a kid, Amy Rose was my favorite character, and now it seems like she’s going to take center stage in the next installment.

The movie “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” has just hit theaters, but enthusiasts of the series are already thrilled to hear that “Sonic 4” is targeting a 2027 release. This suggests that “Sonic 3” doesn’t dedicate any of its runtime to introducing “Sonic 4”, so let’s discuss the possibilities and opportunities that the third installment leaves for the next chapter in the franchise!

Obviously, MAJOR SPOILERS are about to get dropped!

In the thrilling finale of Sonic 3, the epic showdown takes place as our heroes strive to save Earth from the destructive plans of Professor Gerald Robotnik (portrayed by Jim Carrey), the unstable grandfather of Dr. Ivo Robotnik (also Jim Carrey). Manipulated by Gerald, Shadow the hedgehog (Keanu Reeves) is used to charge an orbital station’s “Eclipse Cannon,” intended to annihilate the planet. While Ivo initially believed world domination was the aim, he turns against his grandfather and joins forces with Earth to prevent the disaster. Simultaneously, “Super Sonic” (Ben Schwartz) clashes with “Super Shadow” across the globe, through space, and on the moon’s surface. Eventually, they lay their differences aside and combine their efforts with Knuckles and Tails from Team Sonic to thwart Gerald. In a final act of self-sacrifice, Ivo and Shadow use their combined powers to propel the Eclipse Cannon far enough away for Earth to be safe from the ensuing explosion.

In the fierce fight, it appears that Robotnik met his end; however, the closing sequence of Sonic 3 hints at a future appearance by showing Shadow treading towards the crater where the remains of the Eclipse Cannon lay, intending to recover his distinctive bracelet.

Sonic 3’s Mid-Credits Scene Reveals Metal Sonics & Amy Rose

As a devoted Sonic fan, I couldn’t help but notice that even Sonic 3 has a little extra treat for us during the credits – a sneak peek into the next grand saga of our favorite hedgehog! This tantalizing scene cleverly ties back to the film’s beginning, where Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles were having a forest race. The first time, it turned out to be a cunning ruse by Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie Wachowski (Tika Sumpter) for Sonic’s surprise party. But this time, the race was for real, and Sonic gave it his all, aiming to prove his victory. However, as fate would have it, he landed himself in a fresh batch of trouble!

As I dash through the eerie woods, Sonic’s overconfidence gets the better of him, leading him straight into an ambush by a Metal Sonic robot. The fight between us is intense, but we seem evenly matched. Then, it hits me – I’m not alone here, I’m surrounded! Robots are springing up from everywhere! Just as they’re about to close in, a figure cloaked in mystery leaps into the fray, taking down the robots with a massive hammer. As the dust settles, she unveils herself – it’s none other than Amy Rose, a character I’ve come to know and love in this world of Sonic!

Will Sonic 4 Adapt A Popular Sonic Game Story?

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the unforgettable debuts of Amy Rose and Metal Sonic in the legendary 1993 game, “Sonic CD,” exclusively for the Sega CD console. This remarkable title took us on an epic journey through time, introducing a mysterious realm called Little Planet, which occasionally appeared, and Robotnik’s relentless efforts to seize control, employing time-traveling gems and his enforcer, Metal Sonic, in his quest.

Initially, Amy Rose made her playable debut in the 1998 game “Sonic Adventure”, a title that remains one of the most cherished and influential games within the series. The narrative revolves around Robotnik delving into the roots of the Master Emerald, uncovering its connection to the extinction of echidnas, the Chaos Emeralds it encloses, and their ongoing conflict with a race known as “the Chao” and their deity-like protector “Chaos”. In the storyline, Robotnik smashes the Master Emerald, freeing Chaos and aiming it at Station Square. The game also presents side stories for Amy Rose, such as her recruiting some of Robotnik’s robots to her cause (including E-102 Gamma).

For years, dedicated fans of “Sonic the Hedgehog” have noticed similarities between the plot points in “Sonic 3” and those from “Sonic Adventure 2”. This includes Shadow the Hedgehog’s debut and Gerald Robotnik’s Eclipse Cannon. Given this pattern, it seems logical that future installments like “Sonic 4” might incorporate elements from the initial Sonic Adventures storyline, where Amy Rose acquired her shine, as well as “Sonic CD”, which introduced both Amy and Metal Sonic to the series.

It’s clear that the creators behind “Sonic the Hedgehog” are skilled at extracting significant plot points from Sonic video games and weaving them into an engaging movie narrative. Delving into Amy Rose’s part of the series provides a wealth of opportunities for nodding to beloved gaming elements associated with Sonic.

Sonic 3 is now in theaters. Sonic 4 will be released in 2027.
