As a seasoned cinephile with decades of comic book movie watching under my belt, I must admit that the latest news about the upcoming Superman film has me more than a little excited. Having grown up with the Man of Steel gracing our screens in various forms, it’s heartening to see James Gunn taking the reins and giving us a trailer that feels like a love letter to the source material.
James Gunn, the screenwriter and director of Superman, shared on Instagram that the film’s trailer has set two remarkable records since its debut. In his words, “Krypto truly led us home: With over 250 million views and a million social media posts, Superman now holds the title as both the most-watched and most-discussed trailer in the annals of DC and Warner Bros. This achievement is all thanks to you: thank you! We’re deeply grateful and, above all, thrilled to bring this film to you in July. Have a happy holiday season!” Gunn graciously offered an early Christmas gift to fans, who were more than enthusiastic to return the favor.
It’s great news indeed for Warner Bros., who have faced challenges in establishing a unified DC cinematic universe earlier. This led them to enlist James Gunn and producer Peter Safran, tasked with heading the recently formed DC Studios. The studio is banking heavily on the success of Superman – given his iconic status as one of the most famous fictional characters ever created, and because this film marks the beginning of a new franchise, its success is crucial. Fortunately, the positive buzz surrounding the trailer has been helping to alleviate Warner Bros.’ concerns.
The trailer for Superman accurately reflected the imagery of its original content, delivering just what fans would anticipate from a film about the Sky-Faring Scout – Superman gracefully flying through the heavens, his ordinary persona working at the Daily Planet, intense battle sequences, towering antagonists, and much more. It seems as though Gunn followed the comics like storyboards, with the movie scenes being so remarkably similar to the pages.
In an impressive move, Gunn truly excelled by not only presenting a Superman faithful to his comic book roots, but also incorporating a variety of other DC characters into the mix. This diverse group includes Superman’s pet Krypto, Michael Holt / Mister Terrific, Rex Mason / Metamorpho, Guy Gardner / Green Lantern, Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, and many more. The film is also set to introduce additional comic book characters yet to be seen in the trailer, causing great anticipation among fans for further revelations. Here’s hoping Gunn manages to strike a balance, avoiding overloading the movie with new faces as he lays the foundation for what could become a flourishing franchise.
Among the intriguing adaptations the movie underwent since its initial announcement, a notable one is the removal of “Legacy” from its original title.
The filmmaker explained to ComicBook that initially, they believed the title might convey a sense of reflection or nostalgia, but the movie isn’t about reminiscing; instead, it focuses on moving forward. You’ll grasp where ‘Legacy’ fits in once you watch the film because it centers around Clark and his connection to the script, exploring who he truly is in relation to it – a theme that, as a title, felt too focused on the past.
Superman opens in theaters July 11, 2025.
