As a die-hard WWE fan who’s been through the ups and downs of Raw and SmackDown since the Attitude Era, I can’t help but feel like a kid on Christmas morning with these announcements! The prospect of six hours of WWE content each week is enough to make any wrestling enthusiast’s heart race.
WWE’s Monday Night Raw and SmackDown have both secured fresh agreements with new broadcasting platforms, but these are not the only alterations in store. Commencing in January 2025, Monday Night Raw will transition to Netflix, concluding its remaining episodes of 2024 on USA Network. On the other hand, SmackDown has already migrated to USA Network, but come 2025, it plans a significant overhaul, as WWE’s viewing guide suggests that at the beginning of the year, SmackDown will transform into a three-hour program.
For quite a while, WWE Raw has been a three-hour program, whereas SmackDown has typically been two hours. Historically, many have appreciated the brevity of SmackDown, often criticizing Raw for being lengthy and dragging at times. However, over the past year, Raw has significantly improved as a show, and its move to Netflix will maintain the three-hour runtime.
As a dedicated WWE fan, I’m thrilled about the shift of SmackDown to USA Network. It appears that discussions have centered around a three-hour show format, which seems fitting given USA’s longstanding history as the home of Monday Night Raw. This means that both shows will now be three hours each, offering fans an extended WWE experience every week – a whopping six hours! And let’s not forget the two hours of NXT every week on The CW and special events like Saturday Night’s Main Event. It’s going to be an action-packed week for us WWE enthusiasts!
In Phoenix, Arizona, the WWE’s broadcast schedule changes begin. Starting January 3rd, 2025, SmackDown will be extended to a 3-hour show every Friday night on USA Network at 8/7 C in the U.S. This new format kicks off in Phoenix, Arizona.
2025 is set to be an exciting week for WWE as it kicks off the new year. Raw will make its debut on Netflix, followed by a 3-hour premiere of SmackDown on USA, and an NXT New Year’s Evil special event episode. WWE is hyping up the Raw Netflix premiere as a major event, with Roman Reigns set to face Solo Sikoa in a Tribal Combat match. The title matches also promise excitement, including Liv Morgan vs Rhea Ripley. There will likely be more surprises revealed leading up to the big night.
Regarding SmackDown, the lead-up to the Royal Rumble event will be significant, particularly concerning Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens who have been engaged in a conflict for the past month and a half. It’s expected that Randy Orton might re-enter this narrative at some point. Additionally, the rivalry between Rhodes and Orton is something fans anticipate, so it may be initiated on a grand scale during or post the Royal Rumble.
Fellow WWE enthusiasts, I’m curious about your thoughts on SmackDown expanding to a three-hour program. Feel free to share your wrestling insights with me on Bluesky @KnightofOA!
