As a gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that I was initially taken aback by the decision to bring Gerald Robotnik to life in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. After all, his presence in the original game was limited to flashbacks and video footage, a testament to his demise at the hands of our blue-furred hero. However, after watching the movie and hearing director Jeff Fowler’s reasoning, I can’t help but appreciate the decision.
The upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film seems to have drawn significant inspiration from Sonic Adventure 2, a video game launched for Sega’s Dreamcast console in the past. Although it stays true to many of the original game’s plot points, the movie does introduce some alterations. One of the more striking differences lies in the character of Gerald Robotnik. In the game, Gerald is portrayed only in flashbacks and video clips because his character was already deceased. However, Gerald is alive and well in this new film, with Jim Carrey playing both Gerald and his grandson, Ivo, in scenes where they engage together. Director Jeff Fowler shared the reasoning behind this modification during an interview with ComicBook.
In simpler terms, Fowler expressed that it seemed unfair and wasteful not to have Jim Carrey play two characters in the same movie, as their non-interaction felt like a missed opportunity for comedy. He pitched the idea of delving into Robotnik’s family background to Carrey, suggesting that they had previously explored Sonic’s family in the first two films, but never considered doing the same for the villain.
Considering that this character, Robotnik, has chosen isolation from humanity and embraced technology instead, what kind of impact might a sudden appearance of a grandfather figure have on him? This event could spark intriguing narrative possibilities and unexplored territories that we find enticing to delve into.
In a nod to Fowler’s observation, the idea of found family has been a recurring motif in both the Sonic films and the Knuckles streaming series. Initially, Sonic is isolated on Earth at the start of the first movie, but by the conclusion of the second film, he gains Tom and Maddie Wachowski as “parents” and Tails and Knuckles as “siblings”. Even Knuckles experiences a parallel journey, forging a connection with the Whipple family.
In the Sonic Cinematic Universe, my personal experience shows that friends and family play significant roles, but when it comes to Robotnik, it seems like he’s all alone. Agent Stone might look up to him, yet their bond is more like a dictator-dictee dynamic, with Robotnik exhibiting abusive behavior towards his subordinates. However, the introduction of Gerald in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 offers a fresh perspective on who Ivo truly is. This revelation makes it understandable why Fowler and the filmmakers chose to emphasize Gerald’s role in the movie’s storyline!
