Does Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Connect to the Knuckles Series?

As a dedicated fan who’s followed the Sonic universe since the good old days of Sega Genesis, I must say that the inclusion of Knuckles in the latest Sonic movie is a triumphant nod to the franchise’s rich history. The connection to the Paramount+ series, albeit subtle, adds depth and continuity that long-time fans will appreciate.

Although “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” has just hit the big screen, it’s not the inaugural release in Paramount’s Sonic Cinematic Universe this year. That title goes to the “Knuckles” series, which premiered in April. If you happened to miss out on the series, you might be curious about how it ties into the new movie and whether or not it’s essential viewing. The film does include a subtle reference to the show, but it’s done in such a way that those who have only watched the initial two Sonic movies won’t feel confused.

The connection between the Knuckles series is established through the character of Wade Whipple, portrayed by Adam Pally. Initially appearing as a bungling deputy in Green Hills during the first Sonic movie, Wade reappeared in the sequel with the same role. Although a minor figure in the first two films, Wade’s part expanded substantially in the Knuckles series. In this animated show, Wade finds himself under the tutelage of Knuckles, as the red echidna endeavors to mold Wade into an exceptional warrior. Over the course of six episodes, Wade absorbs knowledge from Knuckles, and the duo develops a strong friendship.

In “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”, I found myself squaring off against the formidable Shadow. As things grew grim, I came to the realization that the one element capable of tipping the scales was none other than the Master Emerald. Following the aftermath of “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”, Knuckles had been guarding this powerful artifact, shielding it from those who sought its destructive power. Despite his reservations about my intentions, Knuckles eventually disclosed its whereabouts, cautioning me that the journey to retrieve it wouldn’t be easy. Upon learning of the task ahead, I was informed that the Master Emerald had fallen into the possession of Wade Whipple, who was using it as a hockey puck!

To sum it up, the portrayal of Knuckles in this show might be subtle, but it does offer viewers a rewarding glimpse into the bond that formed between him and Wade on the Paramount+ series. Their joint escapades suggest that Knuckles holds Wade in high regard. Guarding the Master Emerald is a responsibility Knuckles takes extremely seriously, and he only entrusts it to someone he trusts implicitly. Although we don’t witness Knuckles’ reaction to Wade surrendering the Master Emerald so quickly, there may be more insights into their relationship in future episodes. There are whispers of a second season for Knuckles on Paramount, but no official announcements have been made yet.
