As a lifelong Dragon Ball fan who can still remember staying up past my bedtime to catch the English dub of the original series back in the ’90s, this news has me absolutely thrilled! The hiatus was long and arduous, but it seems that Akira Toriyama’s magic touch is finally returning to our favorite universe.
The popular series, Dragon Ball Super, has recently confirmed its comeback with a fresh narrative, exciting fans who have been eagerly awaiting new developments since the hiatus of its manga last year due to the passing of creator Akira Toriyama. Contrary to what many might have assumed, Dragon Ball Super‘s manga will not be prolonged indefinitely; instead, it’s anticipated that it will return sooner than expected in 2024.
During the Jump Festa 2025 weekend, one of Shueisha’s significant announcements was that the popular series Dragon Ball Super will resume production starting from February next year. This comeback will kick off with a unique, standalone manga story set to be released in the same month. However, it remains undecided if this one-shot will mark the beginning of a larger resurgence for the manga series. For now, Shueisha has unveiled the first glimpse into what fans can anticipate from the grand return of Dragon Ball Super. Here’s a sneak peek:
When Is Dragon Ball Super Coming Back?
The popular series Dragon Ball Super is coming back with a new standalone manga chapter on February 20th in Japan, which will later be accessible via Shueisha’s MangaPlus service, similar to previous Dragon Ball manga releases. This one-shot story seems to bring Trunks and Goten back into the spotlight, much like their extended Super Hero arc in the original manga before its break. Since Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero was the final arc penned by Toriyama prior to his passing, it’s currently unclear whether this story reflects any of his influence or not.
This image also shows a new, full color look at the series’ hero, Clean God, who had initially inspired Trunks and Goten’s super hero personas seen in the manga. This leaves plenty of room to explore while Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan are currently on Beerus’ planet training with Broly. Goten and Trunks will need to protect the Earth while all of its bigger fighters are currently off planet, so there’s a curiosity about what this new one-shot could possibly cover when it hits.
What’s Next for Dragon Ball Super?
It hasn’t been confirmed yet if Dragon Ball Super will resume with a new storyline after its one-shot next year, but this development is promising since Dragon Ball Daima is expected to conclude around the same time. If the connection between these two series continues, it might be possible that the end of Dragon Ball Daima could seamlessly transition into the return of the full Dragon Ball Super manga, introducing a new arc. This could especially happen if characters from Dragon Ball Daima become available for inclusion in the storyline of Dragon Ball Super.
In its own right, Dragon Ball Super possesses some thrilling plot twists, with Black Frieza currently reigning as the strongest warrior in the universe. Post the Super Hero Arc, Frieza remains supreme, leaving Goku and Vegeta striving to train rigorously to confront this formidable foe. Given what we’ve gleaned about the Demon Realm from Dragon Ball Daima, there’s a wealth of storylines yet to be explored in future installments of Dragon Ball Super.
