As an avid Pokemon TCG enthusiast who has been collecting cards since the late ’90s, I am beyond excited about the upcoming Battle Partners set! The return of Trainer’s Pokemon is a nostalgic blast from the past that I’ve been eagerly anticipating.
The second day of the Pokémon Trading Card Game Champions League 2025 tournament held in Osaka, Japan, concluded, with live streaming available on one of The Pokémon Company’s official YouTube channels. To delight viewers, fresh details were unveiled concerning the upcoming expansion pack for the TCG. Expected to hit Japanese stores next month, this set will revive an old favorite – Trainer’s Pokémon, a card type that has been absent from the game for quite some time. We have known about the return of Trainer’s Pokémon since August, but today’s event provided additional information and glimpses at several new cards.
In Japan, the upcoming Pokemon Trading Card Game set is called “Battle Partners”. This collection will be influenced by Pokemon used by characters from the games and anime. Each card in this set will show a miniature image of the trainer, much like the old “Gym Heroes” and “Gym Challenge” sets. Characters such as N from “Pokemon Black and White” have been confirmed to be included. During today’s stream, we got a sneak peek at several Pokemon belonging to character N from “Battle Partners”. Previously revealed cards like N’s Zoroark ex, N’s Reshiram, and N’s Reshiram ex were shown again during the stream, but we also got to see new ones such as N’s Zorua, Darumaka, Darmanitan, and Sigilyph. These cards were initially unveiled at Pokemon Worlds in August.
In the upcoming expansion of Pokemon TCG called Battle Partners, Lillie, a significant character from Sun and Moon, is set to receive more attention. One of her earlier revealed cards for this series was her Clefairy ex, which made an appearance again during today’s live stream. Additionally, we caught a glimpse of Lillie’s Comfey as well.
The artwork for the game “Battle Partners” will depict the three trainers mentioned, along with Hop from “Pokemon Sword and Shield”, who is seen together with the Legendary Pokemon Zacian. Currently, The Pokemon Company has not disclosed the release date for “Battle Partners” in North America. While Japan is set to receive “Battle Partners” in January, we’ll be getting “Prismatic Evolutions” next month instead. It was previously rumored that “Battle Partners” might be released here in March, under the name “Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: Journey Together”. This release window wouldn’t be unexpected given the usual schedule of releases. As 2025 draws near, we hope to receive more information about the game, as well as official translations for some of the cards!
