SNL: Lucy Liu Reprises Kill Bill Character in Quentin Tarantino’s The Grinch

As a longtime fan of both Saturday Night Live and Lucy Liu, I must say that her surprise cameo on this weekend’s episode was nothing short of spectacular! It’s been a while since we last saw O-Ren Ishii, and it was pure nostalgic joy to see her back in action, especially given the creative twist on a classic story like How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

Lucy Liu made a surprise cameo on Saturday Night Live this weekend to save Christmas — or avenge it. She joined host Martin Short in a pre-recorded sketch parodying Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas. When things got too dark for Cindy Lou Who, she called in her sister, “Lucy Liu Who.”

Originally intended for TV but left out due to time constraints, the sketch was subsequently shared online following this weekend’s airing of SNL. It offered a surprisingly simplistic portrayal of the Grinch’s tale that lasted over a minute, before events took an unexpected turn. In the end, after experiencing a change of heart, the Grinch inadvertently dropped the star from the top of the Christmas tree, causing it to impale a Who and triggering a gruesome chain reaction. The final punchline was a “Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Grinch” title card.

Liu donned the attire of her character O-Ren Ishii, as seen in Tarantino’s 2003 movie “Kill Bill: Volume 1”. She then drew a katana from the roast beast to declare, “I’ll slice some Grinch, instead.” With a single strike, she decapitated him. Finishing with a chilling remark, she said, “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

When this sketch featuring Lucy Liu in a silk kimono appeared online, fans were astounded to learn it had been edited due to time constraints. One of the most popular comments on YouTube currently states: “It’s a crime to cut a sketch starring Lucy Liu.” Another comment reads: “I can hardly believe they brought Lucy Liu onto a sketch only to cut it. At least it survives online.” Some fans even wondered about how much Liu was compensated for this role and the production costs, only for it to be excluded from broadcast.

Liu’s performance on Saturday Night Live (SNL) this weekend was a surprise for those who tuned in live, as it was her sole appearance during that broadcast. This year has been quite eventful for Liu, with four film roles added to her resume in 2024. Among these, she starred in the Christmas movie “Red One.” Furthermore, she was part of the main cast for the Netflix original series “A Man in Full,” and lent her voice to the cast of “Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld” on Netflix.

Nonetheless, Liu is predominantly recognized by audiences for her iconic role in “Kill Bill,” as well as other action-packed roles from the early 2000s. She graced our screens with appearances in “Charlie’s Angels” and “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” during that era, alongside the 2002 musical “Chicago.” The return of O-Ren Ishii to the screen after a long hiatus undeniably excited fans, leaving many eager for further appearances in this legendary role.

At the moment, you can watch Saturday Night Live live on Peacock. Unfortunately, Kill Bill isn’t offered by any streaming services with subscriptions at this point in time. However, you can still rent or buy it through various PVOD outlets.
