Every TV Show Netflix Cancelled in 2024 (And How Wrong They Were)

As someone who has spent countless hours binge-watching shows on Netflix, it’s always a bittersweet moment when a series I’ve grown fond of gets the axe. This year, it seems like the streaming giant has been particularly ruthless, canceling some of my favorites one after another.

2024 was a challenging year for Hollywood’s entertainment scene, particularly on Netflix, where some deeply felt cancellations took place. The streaming market has grown increasingly fierce, and Netflix continues to maintain its aggressive stance towards show cancellations. Let’s review the list of series that bade farewell from Netflix in 2024.

In today’s era, numerous factors contribute to TV shows being canceled, with many traditional protective measures based on broadcast schedules becoming obsolete. Furthermore, the entertainment industry is still grappling with the impact of COVID-19 pandemic and the two significant labor strikes in 2023, which undoubtedly contributed to a high number of show cancellations this year. As we bid farewell to 2024, let’s take a moment to reflect on the shows that didn’t make it through this challenging period.

Ratched

In the realm of Netflix productions from 2024, the captivating series, “Ratched”, initially secured a two-season deal way back in September 2020. However, as the years passed, the anticipated second season failed to materialize. In an interview with Variety magazine in 2022, our beloved lead actress, Sarah Paulson, expressed uncertainty about the production of the second season. Fast forward to this year, it was none other than Sarah Paulson who confirmed the disappointing cancellation during a heart-to-heart with a fan, a conversation that was fortunately captured on video.

Obliterated

The action-comedy-drama titled “Obliterated” was taken off the air in February, following its debut in November. This series centered around an elite unit comprising both military and intelligence operatives, who were on a mission to thwart a terrorist threat in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, their efforts took an unexpected turn when they found themselves grappling with completing the mission after indulging in premature celebrations.

The Brothers Sun

In a statement released in March, Netflix confirmed the cancellation of the series titled “The Brothers Sun“, which had debuted on their platform only two months prior in January. This show revolves around an ordinary Asian-American protagonist who learns that his Taiwanese relatives are notorious gangsters. His mother, portrayed by Michelle Yeoh, had fled to the United States to distance herself from them. The narrative unfolds as he grapples with navigating the harsh criminal underworld into which he’s unwillingly been drawn.

Break Point

Netflix has been putting effort into venturing into sports, albeit with varying outcomes, but it seems that the tennis documentary series titled “Break Point” did not manage to maintain its pace. This series offers a glimpse behind the scenes of some major professional tennis tournaments, with two seasons available as of now, the second season having premiered in January this year. However, Netflix announced in March that they would not be producing any additional episodes.

Everything Now

In a single season, the teen dramedy titled “Everything Now” aired eight episodes, but unfortunately, it was ultimately canceled. This news was shared by writer Dylan Brady in an interview with FilmUpdates, where he also discussed common trends regarding cancellations on streaming platforms.

As a film connoisseur, I find myself bound by the whims of the algorithm, a fact that leaves me disheartened. Traditionally, television thrived on a gradual, steady progression across numerous seasons. However, in today’s digital age, the mindset seems to be more about instant success – if a production doesn’t garner 16 million views within the initial 28 days, it’s often deemed irrelevant.

Dead Boy Detectives

Viewers frequently express dissatisfaction when shows end abruptly, but maybe it’s a blessing in disguise that Dead Boy Detectives was swiftly canceled. The series debuted in April and was axed in August, however, this situation is peculiar given its complex production aspects. Dead Boy Detectives was a spin-off of The Sandman — a TV adaptation based on the DC Comics series with the same title. Notably, The Sandman is an original Netflix series, but the DC universe belongs to Warner Bros., which explains why there were attempts to transfer the show over to HBO Max during its development phase.

Eventually, the series “Dead Boy Detectives” resurfaced on Netflix prior to its official debut. Simultaneously, numerous women alleged sexual misconduct against writer Neil Gaiman, leading to a swift cancellation of many of his projects. As of now, it’s anticipated that “The Sandman” Season 2 will air next year; however, given the circumstances, it’s not surprising that “Dead Boy Detectives” was put on hold.

My Dad the Bounty Hunter

Back in June, Netflix decided not to continue the kids’ series My Dad the Bounty Hunter, which means the show has been officially canceled. Over the course of two seasons, it produced a total of 19 episodes and was praised for its entertaining take on social issues.

Buying Beverly Hills and Buying London

Netflix has thrived with unscripted, reality TV-style series, but the real estate drama “Buying Beverly Hills” managed to air for just two seasons before getting axed in August. Currently, there are 18 episodes available on Netflix. Shortly after, the British adaptation of the show, “Buying London,” was also terminated in September.

That 90s Show

It’s worth noting that the Netflix series that made the biggest splash this year was “That 90s Show,” a follow-up to the beloved “That 70s Show.” The sequel brought back some of the original cast members, but primarily in recurring roles, with the main focus shifting to their offspring. However, conversations about this show were frequently disrupted by debates surrounding “cancel culture” and the sexual assault conviction of “That 70s Show” star Danny Masterson, who was found guilty in May of 2023.

KAOS

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, even pairing the charm of Jeff Goldblum with the might of Zeus wasn’t enough to keep the quirky comedy “KAOS” afloat for more than one season. This British production followed the struggles of some ordinary folks trying to make sense of their lives amidst the meddling of unreliable Greek deities.

Unstable

Previously, Rob Lowe and his actual son John Owen Lowe portrayed a make-believe father and son on the comedy show “Unstable” up until this autumn. The second season of the office sitcom debuted in August; however, Netflix decided to discontinue the series in October.

Bad Dinosaurs

Last month, executive producer Paul Schleicher announced that the animated children’s series “Bad Dinosaurs” will not be renewed for another season. Originally debuting this year with eight episodes, the show’s cancellation might disappoint parents more than the young audience, who can watch the same episodes repeatedly without expressing dissatisfaction about the absence of new ones. Many fans were disheartened by this decision as “Bad Dinosaurs” had performed well on Netflix, according to the statistics made public.

Girls5Eva

Girls5Eva represents one of those bittersweet instances where Netflix revived a series from another platform, only to terminate it once more. Numerous online viewers express gratitude for Season 3, but many admit to struggling as their beloved show was canceled for a second time consecutively. The entirety of the three seasons are currently available on Netflix for streaming.
