As a diehard Sonic fan who has been following the franchise since its inception, I must say that I was thrilled to see Jim Carrey reprising his iconic role as Dr. Robotnik (or should I say Eggman?) in “Sonic the Hedgehog 3“. The addition of Gerald Robotnik, his long-lost grandfather, was an intriguing twist that added depth to the character’s backstory.
In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Jim Carrey reprises his role as Ivo Robotnik, the main villain from the Sega video games, as he did in the first two movies. However, this time, Carrey also takes on the part of Gerald Robotnik, Ivo’s estranged grandfather who is a significant character in the games. In the games, Gerald has already passed away and only appears in flashbacks. But in the movie, Gerald is surprisingly alive, even though he’s over a century old. During an interview with ComicBook, director Jeff Fowler mentioned a cut scene that would have explained Gerald’s extraordinary lifespan in the film’s narrative.
In simpler terms, Fowler explained to ComicBook that fans have been wondering how Shadow, Gerald, and Maria’s story spans over five decades, as it begins in the early 1970s, yet he appears later on. He also mentioned that there are scenes showing him using a Shadow quill similar to how Robotnik uses Sonic’s quill, which contains chaos energy. This energy is believed to have a rejuvenating effect and keeps him alive while somewhat reversing the effects of time.
The minor detail we included in the storytelling was a scene showing Gerald taking a small drug in prison, which would visually demonstrate his ability to freeze in time as it showed the wrinkles on his skin smoothing out. However, given the movie’s dense character and plot development, anything not crucial to the narrative’s pace and continuity had to be cut.
In the Sonic Cinematic Universe, Sonic’s quills have played a significant role in multiple storylines. As Fowler notes, the initial films featured Robotnik pursuing Sonic’s quills to energize his devices. Similarly, the Knuckles series on Paramount+ depicted a faction trying to grab Knuckles’ quills for their weaponry. Therefore, it seems plausible that Shadow’s quills could be instrumental in keeping Gerald alive over these years.
It’s a pity that the scene wasn’t included in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but it’s reasonable why Fowler and the filmmakers might have deemed it less crucial for the movie. It’s hard to tell at what stage of production this scene was dropped, but there’s a possibility that fans may get to watch it someday when the Blu-ray eventually comes out.
