Predicting the Biggest Movies at the Box Office in 2025

As someone who grew up with Disney movies and musicals, I am beyond excited about the lineup of films that 2025 promises. With my love for both animation and live-action, it seems like this year is tailored just for me!

As the year 2024 draws to a close, it’s become apparent which films have dominated the box office. Some of the top performers include “Inside Out 2”, “Deadpool & Wolverine”, “Wicked”, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, and “It Ends With Us”. Despite two labor strikes in 2023 and other factors affecting the number of films released this year, the domestic box office is on track for a strong finish. Moreover, 2025 could potentially mark a return to something akin to pre-2020 normality at the box office, if all goes well.

2025 promises an action-packed lineup at cinemas as numerous studios release new films simultaneously over weekends. Could this year break records at the box office? That’s what we aim to discover today. If everything falls into place, 2025 could go down in movie history, and the following anticipated blockbusters are expected to contribute significantly towards meeting these high expectations.

Avatar: Fire and Ash

2022 saw the long-awaited return of Pandora in “Avatar: The Way of Water,” a decade and a half after the Avatar franchise took a break from cinemas. Despite earlier jests about the first Avatar movie having little cultural influence, The Way of Water raked in over $2 billion globally, making it one of the most financially successful films ever produced. It’s expected that “Avatar: Fire and Ash” will be among the highest-grossing movies of 2025, given that many foreign markets have resumed moviegoing since December 2022. Essentially, the box office performance of Fire and Ash will be as powerful as an Ikran, Eywa, and Payakan combined.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Interestingly, among all the Marvel Studios films slated for 2025, it’s the one featuring characters yet to make their mark in this saga that holds the greatest earning potential. “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” has several factors working in its favor, such as a summer release date in late July, which minimizes competition and allows for an extended run through August, similar to the success of films like “Deadpool,” “Wolverine,” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” released early in August. Furthermore, if “First Steps” generates positive word-of-mouth, it could follow the trajectory of the first standalone “Venom” and “Deadpool” movies, capitalizing on fan eagerness to see these comic book characters portrayed accurately on the big screen for the first time. Be sure to keep an eye on “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” as it could mark a box office triumph for Marvel’s First Family.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

Despite not meeting high box office predictions, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning still fell just 20% short of its previous film’s earnings. With a less crowded Memorial Day weekend and exclusive control over IMAX screens for three weeks, there’s a strong possibility that Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will regain the franchise’s box office dominance. If Reckoning approaches the success of its most successful films, Ethan Hunt is set for an impressive farewell.

Michael

If Elvis managed to gross over $150 million domestically, it’s hard to imagine what a film about Michael Jackson titled “Michael” might achieve in October 2025. Known as the King of Pop, this upcoming movie is expected to captivate audiences with its dazzling spectacle and beloved song performances. Given that Michael Jackson’s music had a global impact, it’s likely that the film will resonate with people worldwide, potentially becoming one of the biggest hits of the year.

Zootopia 2

The highly anticipated sequel Moana 2 has solidified Walt Disney Animation Studios as a powerful force at the box office once again. Next Thanksgiving, they plan to maintain this success with another sequel, Zootopia 2. Although not as popularly streamed in the last eight years as Moana, Zootopia earned more money than that musical back in 2016, with over $1 billion worldwide. This box office phenomenon is returning for a new adventure, promising to captivate audiences. Additionally, since unlike Moana 2, Zootopia 2 was originally designed for the big screen, its long-term impact and word-of-mouth could surpass that of Disney Animation’s 2024 blockbuster hit.

Wicked: Part 2

It’s virtually certain that “Wicked” will be a massive box office success in 2025, given its anticipated earnings of over $400 million domestically. The excitement among fans to revisit Elphaba and Glinda is palpable, even though the sequel, “Wicked: Part 2”, may not feature as many cheerful, catchy songs like “Dancing Through Life” or “Popular”. Nevertheless, its predecessor’s overwhelmingly positive reception ensures that it will still rank among the biggest hits of 2025. Remarkably, instead of leaving viewers unsatisfied with a half-told story, “Wicked” has created an anticipation for a sequel, rather than frustration.
