As a seasoned movie buff who’s had the privilege of witnessing the rise and fall of comic book adaptations on the silver screen, I can’t help but feel a sense of exhilaration when it comes to DC Studios’ upcoming Superman. The cast list is as diverse as a comic con convention, and the villain mystery is as tantalizing as the last slice of pie at grandma’s house.
Last week, DC Studios unveiled an extensive promotional push for their upcoming Superman film, yet one crucial piece of information remains elusive – who will serve as the film’s main antagonist? While we know that Lex Luthor (portrayed by Nicholas Hoult) and some other adversaries from DC Comics will appear in the movie, details about the storyline are still sparse. Here are some of the most significant hints and potential villains for this upcoming film.
Given that Superman marks the beginning of the latest DC Universe narrative, it boasts an impressively extensive roster of characters. Apart from Superman, we find Mister Terrific, Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Metamorpho the Element Man, and The Engineer Angela Spica. Furthermore, there’s buzz that Ultraman could make an appearance in the film, while Sean Gunn has been confirmed to portray Maxwell Lord. Additionally, hints suggest a connection to the villain Simon Stagg in the film’s set design.
As a movie critic, I’ve been eagerly anticipating James Gunn’s take on DC’s next cinematic adventure. The direction of the DC Universe storyline provides a compelling foundation, and with the source material being the DC Comics series “All-Star Superman”, we can expect an intricate plot involving multiple villains, all converging against Lex Luthor.
Still several months before the movie’s release, we’re bound to uncover more details as time passes. In the meantime, let me share some information about the potential antagonists in the upcoming Superman film, along with the leading fan speculations surrounding them.
Luthor
It’s clear that Lex Luthor won’t be pals with Superman in the DCU without any conditions. However, it’s possible that he could make an appearance in this film, serving as a secondary character rather than the primary antagonist. This doesn’t necessarily mean he will be the main villain of this particular story. Instead, it would be intriguing if the DCU chose to gradually build up Luthor’s disdain for Superman throughout future narratives.
Despite the fact that Luthor is portrayed as an adversary in this narrative, there are numerous elements at play that divert attention away from him. In the comic book All-Star Superman, Luther devises a plan to kill Superman by subjecting him to excessive solar radiation, which temporarily boosts Superman’s abilities while guaranteeing his death within a year. It is possible that something similar may be unfolding here, as Luthor could be working to weaken Superman in preparation for his battles against even stronger adversaries.
Metamorpho
In the upcoming DC Comics movie, Metamorpho – who possesses the unique ability to transform into any element and shape-shift – may initially be portrayed as an antagonist rather than a hero. This character is frequently depicted as a lonely outcast, striving to utilize his powers for good, while longing for the normal life he could have had but lost due to his transformation.
Metamorpho might serve as a counterpoint to Superman, considering they’re both outsiders; however, Superman can conceal his extraordinary identity beneath a guise of humility. The narrative could revolve around Clark attempting to reach out to Metamorpho and persuade him to join forces, since they share similarities despite their apparent differences.
It’s noteworthy that businessman Simon Stagg, who is said to be one of Metamorpho’s main adversaries, might make an appearance in this film. At minimum, a sign for Stagg Enterprises can be spotted on the streets of Metropolis. In certain storylines, Metamorpho was designed by Stagg, so it’s possible that in this movie, Stagg may possess the ability to summon the Element Man before he regains control over himself.
The Engineer & Ultraman
It’s been confirmed that the character known as The Engineer will be seen in Superman, while there’s a strong rumor suggesting Ultraman might also appear. Over the weekend, a different version of the Superman trailer was shown to audiences watching Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in cinemas, leading many fans to speculate that it includes scenes of The Engineer and Ultraman walking with Luthor. If these three characters are collaborating to some degree, it would align with expectations.
In various stories, Ultraman is portrayed as a villainous counterpart to Superman from another dimension. Some fans speculate that he might make an appearance similar to Bizarro, while others hope for a portrayal of malevolent Kal-El. If he does indeed materialize, it could signal the beginning of inter-dimensional travel in the DC Universe.
Currently, The Engineer is an integral part of the superhero group, The Authority, which features prominently in DC Comics and will debut in the initial phase of the DC Universe through a dedicated movie. It’s reasonable to anticipate that one of the characters would be introduced in this context, and considering Superman’s presence, it isn’t surprising that they could potentially clash. Unlike the Justice League, The Authority is prepared to go to any lengths to enforce their vision of order and justice worldwide.
It’s plausible that both Ultraman and The Engineer originate from a different dimension and have been transported to our world by Luthor with the intent of defeating Superman. Introducing The Authority this way allows for a gradual addition of superheroes rather than an overwhelming influx – given that The Authority were initially conceived in a separate universe before being integrated into the main DC Comics universe in 2011.
Brainiac
In conclusion, the idea that AI Brainiac might serve as the unexpected antagonist in Superman remains a popular yet tenuous theory among fans, largely stemming from Gunn’s statement last year about the 2008 Brainiac storyline from Action Comics influencing this movie. However, there is limited evidence to support this theory, with the trailer, cast list, or additional materials not providing clear indications of Brainiac’s appearance.
On July 11, 2025, Superman makes his grand entrance in theaters. Meanwhile, the DC Universe has kicked off its operation with the animated series “Creature Commandos” now available for streaming on Max.
