Death in Paradise Christmas special answers big mystery about DI Mervin Wilson

As an admirer of captivating narratives and intriguing character arcs, I must say that Don Gilet’s portrayal of Mervin Wilson in Death in Paradise has left me thoroughly enthralled. The way his character’s life experiences are woven into the storyline, revealing layers of complexity and emotion, is truly commendable.

In place of Ralf Little’s character DI Neville Parker from Death in Paradise, who departed at the conclusion of season 13, this year’s Christmas special introduced the series’ new main character.

Mervin Wilson, portrayed by Don Gilet from EastEnders, appeared to be on vacation in Saint Marie when his employer in London requested his assistance in identifying the culprit behind the murders of two individuals wearing Santa suits and the attempted killing of a third.

On his way home early, the DI encountered his supervisor who expressed disappointment over the island not meeting their expectations, as far as he was concerned.

I temporarily paused my journey home while I delved into figuring out the puzzling fact that one gun seemed to be involved in incidents across various places simultaneously.

And that wasn’t the only mystery hanging over the narrative.

As Selwyn noticed, there remained an enormous uncertainty about Mervin’s past history, which ran parallel to their main narrative.

“How did you end up here, in Saint Marie?” he asked him.

Mervin was cagey.

“A mate recommended it, no other reason than that, really,” he responded.

But Selwyn wasn’t satisfied with his answer.

“You haven’t warmed to the island?” he probed.

Again, Mervin tried to shut down his questioning.

“I just wasn’t feeling it,” he replied. “Some places you take to them, some you don’t.”

Again, Selwyn attempted to coax the truth out of him.

“And that’s why you decided to leave early?” he asked, teasingly.

However, when a woman suspected Mervin of being the murderer after observing him acting suspiciously near the house of a resident who dons a Santa Claus costume for a supermarket, Selwyn felt compelled to question Mervin about his secrets. Eventually, this led to Mervin confessing.

The investigator journeyed to the island of Saint Marie for the first encounter with his mother. He thought he’d found her home, where he stood hesitantly, gathering courage to ring the bell or knock on the door.

However, his anxiety overtook him, leading him to realize it had all been an error. Consequently, he chose to leave sooner rather than later.

As a movie enthusiast, despite my initial plan to depart, I unfortunately didn’t get the chance to meet my mom, as I learned upon my return to our home that she had passed away a few months prior. A neighbor broke the heartbreaking news to me.

Later on, he assured Selwyn, “Everything’s okay. I’m doing well, genuinely,” and added, “To be honest, I didn’t know her at all, so it doesn’t affect my situation in the least.

But he was visibly disheartened by the development.

Selwyn asked, “Even though it may seem less vibrant than when you first came, are you considering leaving based on that?

Maybe exploring the island of Saint Marie, where your mother lived, could offer some insights into who she was.

However, though Mervin first seemed determined to depart, the commissioner’s remarks evidently made a difference. This is why, in the end, Mervin has chosen to stay, stepping up as the main character for the upcoming season of the show.

Over time, much like customary practice, he’ll eventually come to value the allure of the Caribbean island and its inhabitants, not merely for its scenic charm and spirit, but because it has become an integral piece of his identity, though it might not seem so at present.
