Dragon Ball Reveals Akira Toriyama’s Original Designs for New Majin Buus

As a long-time Dragon Ball enthusiast and connoisseur of Akira Toriyama’s artistry, I must say that the recent unveiling of his original designs for Majin Kuu and Majin Duu was an absolute treat! The anime team has truly done justice to Toriyama’s vision, capturing the essence of these new characters in a way that only they could.

In the latest episodes of Dragon Ball Daima, we’re introduced to a fresh batch of Majin Buu descendants, and Shueisha has recently unveiled the original designs that the late creator Akira Toriyama created for Majin Kuu and Majin Duu. Interestingly, Dragon Ball Daima was initially inspired by the 40th anniversary of Akira Toriyama’s first Dragon Ball manga, which originally appeared in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. Regrettably, Toriyami passed away before the anime adaptation began, but fans can still appreciate his work through the new storylines and characters that are being introduced as part of the ongoing adventure in the new anime.

In each episode of “Dragon Ball Daima,” there’s been a heartfelt tribute to the late Akira Toriyama, and it’s been evident that he played a significant role in this fresh, unseen storyline. The creator has also introduced several new character designs to enrich the Demon Realm, such as the newly paired Majin Kuu and Duu. In honor of their recent introduction, Shueisha recently unveiled Akira Toriyama’s original sketches for these characters during the Jump Festa 2025 event.

Dragon Ball Reveals Toriyama’s Original Designs for Kuu and Duu

In episode 11 of Dragon Ball Daima, we meet Majin Duu, the second successor of Majin Buu. Previously, it was disclosed that Dragon Ball Daima rewrote Majin Buu’s origin story, revealing that a sorcerer named Marba, not Babidi, was responsible for creating the monster initially. The modifications to Majin Buu’s backstory don’t end there. In this new installment, Dr. Arinsu collaborates with Marba to create a new Majin, one they intend to control to prevent the disastrous consequences of the previous encounter with Buu.

The initial experiment incorporated a remnant of Majin Buu, while Marba and Arinsu filled in with monsters from the Demon Realm for the remaining parts. A Saibamen seed was added lastly, resulting in a new entity called Majin Kuu. However, to Arinsu’s dismay, Kuu turned out weaker than anticipated. Subsequently, the final piece of Buu and Kuu’s younger sibling Duu were created, as shown in the most recent episode of the anime. Both Duu and Kuu share visual characteristics with Majin Buu and Saibamen.

What’s Next for Majin Kuu and Duu in Dragon Ball Daima?

It’s evident that the design concepts for characters Kuu and Duu by the late Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama were brilliantly realized in the Dragon Ball Daima anime. However, these intriguing villains raise questions about what Toriyama has in store for them next. While Kuu was found to be less powerful than Tamagami warrior from the First Demon World, he possesses a level of intelligence that neither Duu nor original Buu possessed. This adds an intriguing twist to the storyline.

It appears Duu is the more formidable of the two, having shown a good fight against Tamagami and exhibiting some of the unusual abilities that the original Buu did. It’s possible he’ll be powerful enough to face off against Goku and the others later. However, the duo of Majins could prove to be a stronger adversary than their jovial demeanor suggests. This is reminiscent of Toriyama’s writing style, where seemingly comedic characters can become formidable warriors. It’s possible this trend continues here.
