Assassin’s Creed Shadows Receives New Details on Naoe’s Backstory and Mission

As a seasoned gamer with years of immersion in various virtual worlds under my belt, I must say that Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows has truly piqued my interest. The setting in feudal Japan, the intriguing characters, and the hint of a deeper narrative all promise an engaging experience.

In Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows, many fans’ long-held dreams come true: You get to embody an Assassin in feudal Japan. The main characters are Naoe, the daughter of Fujibayashi Nagato, and Yasuke, a retainer of Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku era. Their lives intertwine when the daimyo launches an invasion on the Iga Province, resulting in the devastation of Naoe’s homeland.

Undeniably, I yearn for justice. Yet, an encounter with Yasuke has led us on a journey of retribution against the wrongdoers. As creative director Jonathan Dumont shared with Entertainment Weekly, there’s a touch more complexity to it. For one, my mother has been missing, and I know very little about her past.

Naoe grew up sheltered by her father from global events, but eventually, her peaceful life is disrupted and she finds herself drawn into conflict. She’s not well-versed in her ancestry, as her father has been educating her, yet she knows little about her mother who left long ago. As an old Japanese saying goes, “A frog in a well doesn’t know the ocean exists.

She’s thrust into reality, where she will discover that being a shinobi is not her only identity. There seems to be a trace of ancestry or perhaps a secret type of shinobi lineage related to the Assassins, suggesting a connection.

In the course of seeking revenge, Naoe eventually recognizes a world in distress and begins to appreciate the community values instilled by her father. Could she create a more favorable world? [She comes to understand] there are people who cannot protect themselves, which aligns somewhat with the principles of the Assassin Brotherhood. Furthermore, through her encounters with a child named Junjiro, she starts to envision a brighter future for Japan, although his background remains largely unexplored at this point.

It’s confirmed that every tool belonging to Naoe is linked to her background and education. “The Concealed Knife, which she received from her father, will reveal some intriguing details about its significance.” Furthermore, he likens her to a panther observing its quarry.

It’s yet unclear how the Templars, historical adversaries of the Brotherhood, fit into this picture. Additionally, more details about what happened to Yasuke following the Honnō-ji Incident in 1582 could be revealed.

On February 14th, 2025, we’ll be unveiling “Assassin’s Creed Shadows“. This action-packed game will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC platforms. To learn more about the unique characters Naoe and Yasuke, follow this link for further details.
