Epic Games Store Disappoints Everyone With Newest Free Game

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming experience under my belt, I must say, this year’s Epic Games Store holiday freebies have been a bit of a letdown. I remember the excitement of past years, eagerly waiting for each week’s new game revelations. But this year, it feels like Epic is scraping the bottom of the barrel.

It’s been announced and made available that the Epic Games Store is offering its fifth free mystery title. Past offerings have generally fallen short for Epic Games Store users, with less impressive selections compared to previous years. Regrettably, the most recent free game on Epic Games Store doesn’t just maintain this trend but takes it a step further in disappointment.

If you’re not familiar, Epic Games Store typically offers a complimentary game or multiple games as part of a bundle on Thursdays. However, during holidays, the number of free games increases, with a different game given away every day. This started on December 19 and will continue until January 2. Essentially, this means more free games for Epic Games Store users, but you only have 24 hours to claim each one before it’s replaced by another.

Previously, free mystery holiday games were among the standout free game downloads of each year. However, that trend has shifted this year. This is particularly clear with the ‘free game’ offered on December 23rd, which is actually not a full game, but a free expansion pack (DLC).

On December 23rd, the free game available on Epic Games Store is “Dark and Darker – Legendary Status”, but you’ll need the base game “Dark and Darker” to play it. It’s a free-to-play, early access game, and usually, this DLC costs $30. If you pay $30 for “Dark and Darker”, your account will be upgraded from a basic “Squire” account to the premium “Legendary” status, giving you access to extra features that you can learn more about here.

Despite a relatively modest selection thus far, PC gamers remain optimistic that Epic Games Store will deliver some impressive offerings by Christmas Eve and Christmas. However, the five games already released don’t seem to indicate this will be the case. If there is going to be a shift in fortunes, it will likely happen on these two days, as they are the peak of the holiday season. December 31st and New Year’s Day are also significant days for their promotions, but if Christmas fails to deliver anything exciting, there’s little hope for New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day either.
