As a dedicated fan who has been following the Karate Kid saga since its inception, I must say, the news of potential Cobra Kai spin-offs sends a thrill down my spine. The journey of this series from viral videos to YouTube Red and finally to Netflix has been nothing short of incredible. If given the chance, I’d love to see the younger characters step into the limelight, perhaps opening their own dojos or even exploring martial arts in college or while traveling.
The co-creator and showrunner of Cobra Kai, Jon Hurwitz, shared that he’s currently developing at least one spin-off as the final season approaches. The sixth and final part of the series is set to release on Netflix on February 13, 2025. When a fan inquired about potential character-focused spin-offs, Hurwitz replied with optimism: “I really hope so.
From humble beginnings as a series of viral videos in the early 2000s, Cobra Kai has grown to become a full-blown YouTube Red series, and later a Netflix original. Although the series is set to conclude next year, the Karate Kid saga continues with the upcoming movie Karate Kid: Legends, scheduled for release on May 30, 2025. Despite Ralph Macchio appearing in both, Hurwitz clarified that Cobra Kai and Legends are not linked in any way. However, there’s a glimmer of possibility that we might see more of Cobra Kai in some capacity in the future.
During an informal chat with fans on X on Sunday, Hurwitz casually mentioned the possibility of spin-offs. He didn’t provide additional information or respond to further queries about this topic, but fans expressed their expectations and ideas in response. Many expressed enthusiasm for a sequel that might feature some younger Cobra Kai characters as senseis, potentially even opening their own dojos. Others suggested a more gradual approach — maybe delving into martial arts in a college environment or while traveling.
A significant aspect of the discussion revolved around the impact that “Legends” might have on “Cobra Kai”. In 2022, Hurwitz stated on Twitter that “Legends” wasn’t related to or focused on the cast of “Cobra Kai”. When asked if the movie would reference the Netflix series in any way during a Q&A session on Sunday, Hurwitz replied: “I haven’t watched the film yet, but I hear Daniel LaRusso is featured in it!
Although it appears that “Legends” doesn’t merely disregard “Cobra Kai,” it might even go against it in certain ways. For instance, the trailer for “Legends” depicts the Miyagi-Do dojo in a state similar to its early condition in “Cobra Kai,” unlike the refurbished and repainted version we’ve seen in later seasons of “Cobra Kai.” Furthermore, “Legends” seems to be laying the groundwork for Daniel’s final departure from martial arts, which is in stark contrast to his return in “Legends.” In an interview with Variety, Macchio himself stated that the movies and the TV series exist within distinct universes, implying that “Legends” could possibly reference other films in the franchise, but not “Cobra Kai.
Speaking from my perspective as a fan, Jonathan Entwistle’s recent statement to Entertainment Weekly offers an intriguing suggestion that the Legends and Cobra Kai productions might share some connections. He mentioned having in-depth discussions with the Cobra Kai team about incorporating exciting elements into the movie, aiming to create a cohesive feel across both projects.
The level of connection between the movie and the series will serve as our strongest clue regarding the future direction of the franchise across both platforms. Beginning February 13, 2025, catch the continuation of Cobra Kai Season 6, Part 3 on Netflix. Meanwhile, mark your calendars for May 30, 2025 when Karate Kid: Legends hits the big screen in theaters.
