As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the upcoming multiplayer action RPG, Elden Ring: Nightreign, has me truly intrigued. With FromSoftware’s reputation for crafting immersive and challenging games, and the addition of cooperative gameplay, this spinoff title seems like a promising venture.
A standalone multiplayer Elden Ring experience may have come out of nowhere for the vast majority of us, but even so, thanks to FromSoftware’s track record, when the studio announces something new, you pretty much have to pay attention. Elden Ring: Nighreign is promising a unique roguelike multiplayer action RPG experience that takes the bones of From’s beloved 2022 open world masterpiece and remixes and recontextualizes them in a way that’s completely new to the developer- and we’re quite excited about that. Here, we go over the key details that you, too, should know about Elden Ring: Nightreign.
PREMISE
In essence, Nightreign shares similarities with both Elden Ring and Monster Hunter, but it offers a unique take beyond that. Directed by FromSoftware veteran Junya Ishizaki, Nightreign is a cooperative action RPG set in a run-based PvE environment. It recycles and rearranges aspects from Elden Ring, including its world, enemies, weapons, mechanics, and more, to create a distinct multiplayer experience. The movement has been made faster and more agile, the structure has been entirely overhauled, and the focus has now shifted towards cooperative gameplay.
LIMVELD
As a gamer diving into the realm of Nightreign, I can confirm that this game is not set within the same universe as Elden Ring, although it shares some striking similarities in terms of its landscape, Limveld. FromSoftware assures us that Limveld in Nightreign is more of a reimagined and parallel version of Limgrave from Elden Ring.
THREE-DAY STRUCTURE
In Elden Ring: Nightreign, the adventure unfolds over a three-day cycle that also incorporates elements from battle royale games. The game challenges players to survive for three days as they traverse Limveld and confront its perils during both day and night. Each night presents a new boss battle (and yes, many popular Elden Ring bosses are featured, with eight in total), while each morning finds a large circle contracting, much like in a battle royale game. Reach the end of the third-day, and you’ll encounter the final boss for that run, known as the Nightlord.
PLAYABLE HEROES
Elden Ring: Nightreign subtly borrows ideas from multiplayer games with class systems, although it doesn’t actually have classes. Instead, players can choose to play as one of eight distinct characters, each with their own unique skills, strengths, and vulnerabilities. FromSoftware is keeping details about these playable heroes under wraps, but during the IGN interview, Ishizaki mentioned that one of the characters will utilize a Spirit Ash as a gameplay mechanic, which seems to be some kind of spiritual ally.
PROGRESSION AND CUSTOMIZATION
In the realm of run-based roguelikes, Elden Ring: Nightreign sets itself apart by separating run-specific and overall advancement. Throughout your runs, you’ll be searching for more powerful weapons to combat enemies. At Sites of Graces, you can enhance your character by leveling up, which will provide unique stat boosts depending on the character you’ve chosen from the eight available options. Each run will start with a reset of these advancements, but players will still have the opportunity to make permanent improvements. Let me elaborate on those permanent upgrades…
RELICS
In the game Nightreign, players should focus on tracking down Relics as they offer valuable benefits throughout their gaming sessions. These Relics can be obtained during any run, regardless of its length, and they grant permanent upgrades that enhance your character’s abilities across all future runs. You can boost your attack power, increase your total health points, or apply a range of unique bonuses that will make subsequent playthroughs less challenging, not just for you but also for your teammates.
CO-OP OR SOLO
The game Elden Ring: Nightreign is uniquely crafted to focus primarily on multiplayer interaction, marking a new direction for FromSoftware in this aspect, despite their previous games featuring robust multiplayer components. The recommended play style is a cooperative adventure for three players, but it’s also confirmed that the game can be played alone if preferred. However, playing with two players isn’t an option, and the game’s challenge will adapt according to whether you’re adventuring solo or in a group of three.
NOT FULL PRICED
It’s clear that FromSoftware has labeled Elden Ring: Nightreign as a spinoff, and it appears the multiplayer game will follow suit with its pricing strategy. Specific details are yet to be disclosed by either FromSoftware or publisher Bandai Namco, but Ishizaki has confirmed to PC Gamer that the game won’t be priced at full cost. Instead, the pricing will resemble Shadow of the Erdtree, suggesting a price tag similar to $39.99 for Nightreign. This expansion, for reference, is sold for that amount, so it seems we can anticipate a similar price range for Nightreign as well.
NOT LIVE SERVICE
In contrast to the common assumption that contemporary multiplayer games are live service titles, Elden Ring: Nightreign stands out as a game primarily focused on multiplayer, but FromSoftware clarifies that it isn’t categorized as a live service game. As Ishizaki explained to PC Gamer, the studio aims for Nightreign to provide a full and complete gaming experience right from the box at purchase without requiring additional content or subscriptions over time.
The director mentioned that while they will certainly provide patches and adjustments after the game’s debut as necessary, their long-term plans for post-launch content are undecided at this point. In essence, their main focus is on the launch of Nightreign, but they will evaluate other possibilities following the game’s release. They emphasized that balance updates and similar post-release modifications, which they have implemented in previous games, will be a top priority moving forward. For any additional plans, they are still brainstorming ideas.
NETWORK TEST
The game titled “Nightreign” is expected to launch in 2025, although the exact date remains undisclosed. However, we do have a sneak peek into when gamers can experience the multiplayer action RPG firsthand – a closed network test is planned for February. This test will offer a slice of the game, enabling you to play as four out of the eight characters. Registration for this network test is set to commence on January 10, as announced by FromSoftware.
