As a lifelong Marvel fan who has seen every movie in the MCU multiple times, Paul Rudd‘s candid comment about Ant-Man’s powers during his recent SNL appearance caught my attention. While I have always been a fan of the quirky and lovable Scott Lang, I must admit that there have been moments when I too questioned the practicality of his size-changing abilities.
Over the weekend, Paul Rudd playfully criticized his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during a guest appearance on Saturday Night Live. Joining other popular celebrities for Martin Short’s induction into the “Five-Timers Club,” Rudd made light of his character Ant-Man, commenting, “Ant-Man’s abilities aren’t exactly impressive.
On the recent SNL episode, they revisited an old gag as Short made his fifth appearance as host. They jokingly suggested that this select group of hosts with five or more appearances had unique perks, fostering a sense of camaraderie among them backstage. After some openhearted confessions, ex-SNL cast member and five-time host Kristen Wiig quipped: “Go ahead! In this exclusive club, you can be totally candid! Anybody else up for sharing?
“I’ll go,” Rudd offered. “Ant-Man’s powers aren’t good.”

In the same skit, Rudd’s Avengers co-star Scarlett Johansson was also present, but she didn’t poke fun at Black Widow. Instead, she playfully closed the door on her husband, SNL’s Colin Jost. Overall, the skit was clever enough to compensate for its recurring themes.
Rudd could be casually commenting on this or genuinely expressing a concern from an SNL writer about the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Ant-Man character. Despite being popular within the franchise, Ant-Man might face more criticism than other heroes. For instance, some fans were disheartened that Marvel opted for Scott Lang instead of Hank Pym as the big-screen Ant-Man. Additionally, the MCU’s depiction of Pym Particles has been criticized for being confusing and inconsistent.
It’s clear that Pym Particles are a science fiction concept, not overly grounded in real science, and their application within the Marvel Cinematic Universe can be inconsistent. In the initial film, Hank explains that these particles shrink objects by decreasing the space between atoms, thus preserving their original strength and mass. This works well for making Ant-Man powerful, but it leads to an odd situation when he stands on another character’s shoulder without them sensing it.
In simpler terms, Hank explains to Scott that he needs to get smaller than an atom to enter the quantum realm, which seems contradictory if his technology only reduces the space between atoms. To make things even more confusing, when you consider the time travel aspects, many viewers believe that the Pym Particles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are just a convenient plot device.
As a passionate moviegoer, I must admit that I’m not privy to the specific timeline for when Ant-Man, The Wasp, or other associated characters will make their next appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, with two upcoming Avengers films in Phase Six, it’s safe to say they’ll find a spot somehow in the grand scheme of things.
