As a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast who has seen the original trilogy more times than I care to admit, I must say that Neel from Skeleton Crew has quickly become one of my favorite characters in the franchise. It’s refreshing to see a character who is just an ordinary kid trying to find his way home amidst the chaos of the galaxy – no special powers or hidden destinies required.
The long-running series, Star Wars, has a rich tradition of creating characters that endear themselves to fans. For a while, it seemed that no new character could match up to legends like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewbacca, or even the adorable Ewoks. But then came The Mandalorian in 2019, introducing Grogu (also known as “Baby Yoda”), a breakout star who has been one of Star Wars’ most popular characters in years. Now, another new character is winning over fans and creating quite a stir – all thanks to the fresh Star Wars: Skeleton Crew series on Disney+!
Skeleton Crew’s Neel is Star Wars’ New MVP
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
Neel stands out as a unique character because he embodies the type of ordinary hero that the Star Wars series has been missing for quite some time – the noble commoner. Star Wars: A New Hope remains the cornerstone of the franchise due to its compelling narrative, which follows an ordinary boy (Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker) who discovers his extraordinary destiny as a galactic hero. This tale of a hero’s journey is timeless and largely devoid of complex mythology or backstory. Since then, most characters introduced in the Star Wars universe, such as Grogu, have either been rooted in its rich lore or are connected to it in some way.
Not Neel though!
In the story of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew”, most of the main characters are designed to reflect various elements of the franchise: Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers) aspires to be like a Jedi; Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) is reminiscent of Han Solo; KB (Kyriana Kratter) is a character with human and droid traits, symbolizing certain non-neurotypical groups. Notably, Neel stands out as the first “Star Wars” character since Luke – perhaps – who serves as an easily relatable figure for viewers – devoid of extraordinary abilities, missions, or beliefs – simply a regular child navigating a chaotic universe, yearning to return home to his family.
Initially, the latter episodes of “Skeleton Crew” could delve deeper into Neel’s personality, potentially mirroring familiar themes or storylines from earlier. However, following Episode 4 titled “Can’t Say I Remember No Attin”, many viewers have been captivated by the presence of a charming “Star Wars” character who doesn’t necessitate prior knowledge to enjoy – a figure that is universally lovable and morally upstanding, making him an inspiring character to support.
Who Plays Neel In Star Wars: Skeleton Crew?
Neel might seem like an ordinary, everyday character, but behind the scenes, crafting him was a cleverly complex task!
Actress Kacie Borrowman brings the physical aspect to life for the character Neel. She employs a unique blend of on-set acting while wearing an animatronic headpiece costume, as well as facial motion capture to amplify Neel’s peculiar, youthful mannerisms and expressions. Subsequently, actor Robert Timothy Smith voices Neel, lending him his distinctive, childlike tone.
