As a lifelong fan of The Lord of the Rings and someone who has spent countless hours immersed in Middle-earth, I am thrilled to hear that “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” is coming to digital platforms this Friday, December 27th. Though it may not have had a successful run at the box office, I believe that this animated film will find its audience once it becomes available for streaming.
Starting this coming Friday, December 27th, you’ll be able to watch “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” from home. This film initially premiered in theaters on December 13th, but unfortunately, it didn’t do exceptionally well at the box office. Here’s hoping that more people will discover and enjoy it once it becomes available for streaming!
Instead of streaming services like Netflix or Hulu, “The War of the Rohirrim” will be accessible through digital Premium Video On Demand (PVOD) outlets such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Vudu. The film can be purchased on these platforms starting at $24.99, with a possibility of other platforms offering similar pricing. If the movie is rentable, it’s likely to cost around $19.99. For those who prefer physical copies, pre-orders for the Blu-ray are available, but the disc won’t be shipped until December 31st, enabling streamers to watch the movie a bit earlier.
This animated adaptation titled “The War of the Rohirrim” has received a mix of opinions, but it’s certainly recommended for lovers of “The Lord of the Rings”, anime enthusiasts, and fantasy fans in general. It shares the same world of Middle-earth as Peter Jackson’s movies, yet offers an independent narrative that can be enjoyed without prior knowledge. The story also features a cameo and framing device, with Miranda Otto narrating it as Éowyn, sharing the tale with her child following the events of “The Return of the King”.
The tale unfolds 183 years prior to “The Fellowship of the Ring,” in the human realm known as Rohan. The narrative revolves around Héra (Gaia Wise), the princess and sole child of King Helm Hammerhand (Brian Cox). She demonstrates strong leadership skills and embodies the noble spirit of Rohan’s shieldmaidens, upholding their legacy with distinction.
The film centers around a family conflict escalating into a civil war in Rohan, instigated by Héra’s old friend Wulf. This animation stands apart due to its unique hand-drawn style, allowing it to portray Tolkien’s fantastical realm in a distinct manner compared to other adaptations. At the same time, it retains a sense of realism consistent with the live-action films’ settings.
As a spectator, I find myself eagerly anticipating the fate of the upcoming animated “Lord of the Rings” films, as the success of “The War of the Rohirrim” seems to play a significant role in shaping their future. Many fellow fans are crossing their fingers, hoping this film will regain momentum. Simultaneously, two fresh live-action films within the franchise are currently under development, with “The Hunt for Gollum” set to debut in 2026. For those eager to delve back into Middle-earth, “The War of the Rohirrim” will be available starting this Friday, December 27th, on various PVOD stores.
