As a long-time comic book enthusiast and someone who has been following the DC universe for decades, I must say that the announcement of “Creature Commandos” Season 2 fills me with an uncontainable excitement! The first season was a refreshing take on these classic characters, and I can’t wait to see where they take it next.
Task Force M is moving forward with its next assignment: Season 2. On Monday, DC Studios officially confirmed that the mature animated series “Creature Commandos,” which marks the initial project under DC Universe by co-chairs James Gunn and Peter Safran, has been renewed for another season even before the conclusion of its inaugural season (set to air on Jan 9, 2025). This upcoming series from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation features Viola Davis as the voice behind Amanda Waller, who enlists a covert team comprised of imprisoned monsters for tasks deemed too risky for humans, serving as the last and most extreme option.
Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President of HBO & Max Comedy Programming, expressed that it’s only James Gunn who could create this eccentric group of monsters with a heartwarming touch, making you fervently cheer for them. We’re thrilled to continue their adventures alongside James, showrunner Dean Lorey, Peter Safran, and our esteemed partners at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation,” is one way to paraphrase the original statement.
Under the guidance of Rick Flag Sr., played by Frank Grillo, this eccentric group of monsters and misfits comprises characters like The Bride (Indira Varma), a reanimated version of the spurned Frankenstein’s monster (David Harbour); Nina Mazursky (Zoe Chao), whose head resembles a fishbowl; the Nazi-slaying automaton GI Robot, and the feral Weasel, both voiced by Sean Gunn; and the radioactive Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk). In the course of season 1, they were tasked with safeguarding, then eliminating Pokolistan Princess Ilana Rostovic (Maria Bakalova), following orders from Waller to thwart a catastrophic future predicted by the renegade Amazonian sorceress Circe (Anya Chalotra).
Since one member of the disposable team has met their demise, it’s uncertain whether any of the Creature Commandos will make it through to season 2. In case fresh monsters join Task Force M in the upcoming season, here are some potential choices for their next operation:
Clayface
As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled about the upcoming seven-episode season that’s introducing Clayface, a shape-shifting mud monster voiced by Tudyk, who’s known for his criminal escapades as a Batman villain. It’s a mystery which Clayface this might be – the movie monster turned masked killer (Basil Karlo), the super criminal with a clay face (Matt Hagen), the flesh-melting monster with a malleable body (Preston Payne), or the metahuman spawn of Clayface III and IV (Cassius “Clay” Payne). Interestingly, a more recent version of Clayface fought alongside Batman as a member of the Gotham Knights, suggesting that Clayface might use his powers for good in this series. Following his appearance in Creature Commandos, we can expect to see this man-monster headlining a Mike Flanagan-penned Clayface movie from DC Studios in 2026.
Vincent Velcro
Originally part of the Creature Commandos unit, Sergeant Vincent Velcro chose to join a secretive U.S. military project called “Project M” (code name for monsters), to evade a 30-year prison sentence in an Army jail. During this operation, he was given experimental concoctions containing New Mexican vampire bat blood, transforming him into a bloodsucker. In the bizarre ensemble of World War II warriors, Velcro teamed up with werewolf Warren Griffith and the Frankenstein-esque Marine Elliot “Lucky” Taylor, under the leadership of human Lieutenant Matthew Shrieve.
2000’s “Creature Commandos,” led by Tim Truman and Scot Eaton, transformed Velcoro (previously known as Velcro) into a fanged, red-skinned vampire. This team also included Aten, the bandaged mummy; Medusa, who had snakes for skin; Wolfpack and Patch. Can’t have a monster squad without a bloodsucker, right?
Medusa
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’d rephrase it like this: Originally not part of the initial lineup for Project M, Dr. Myrna Rhodes was once the Army’s leading plastic surgeon before an unfortunate incident involving the Creature Commandos led to her being drenched in a concoction of experimental chemicals. This transformation left her with serpentine hair and eyes that seemed to hold a life of their own, reminiscent of Medusa from Greek mythology. Embracing this new identity, she joined the Creature Commandos. In the comic series Justice League: Generation Lost #16 (2011), my character was pitted against the Justice League International. The antagonist Maxwell Lord had taken control of the Creature Commandos, forcing us to engage in a fierce battle alongside Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes), Booster Gold, and Captain Atom.
GI Robot II (or III)
1981’s “Weird War Tales” issue 101 introduced J.A.K.E.-1, also known as the “GI Robot,” a product of an MIT think tank. Programmed to recognize and attack only enemy forces, specifically the Imperial Japanese Army in this instance, Jake-1 was equipped with deadly weapons like arm machine guns and flame throwers, making him a tough adversary for the Axis powers. The GI Robot reappeared in issue 108 of “Weird War Tales,” where he assisted the Creature Commandos, only to be destroyed when he walked through a minefield while rescuing a princess (a plot reminiscent of another tale). Despite being repaired, J.A.K.E.-1 met his end in issue 111 by self-destructing to save the Creature Commandos during their initial encounter with him.
In issue #113 of “Weird War Tales”, the Marine robot was refashioned as J.A.K.E.-2, engaging in a fierce fight against the relentless samurai robot Krakko. The armored combat machine beheaded J.A.K.E.-2 with his sword, but the headless GI Robot turned its own head into a weapon to protect its comrades. These Marines affectionately dubbed the second GI Robot “the steel man” instead of “Tin Man”. Further adventures of J.A.K.E.-2 were chronicled in subsequent issues, where he acquired his robo-dog companion Cap (short for Computerized Automatic Patrol Dog No.1), and eventually became part of the Creature Commandos team.
Gunner
Truman and Eaton’s comic book series, titled “Creature Commandos,” brings back the character Gunner Mackey in their eight-part storyline. In this revival, Gunner is under the control of Professor Mazursky, a fan of movie monsters, who resurrected him using advanced technology. Despite having died on a Pacific beach in 1945, Mazursky brought Gunner back to life and fitted him with de-stimulation implants in his new cyborg body. This hybrid being has the mind of a mini-computer bio-generated within it, and its right arm is equipped with a .50 caliber mini-cannon. The Marine adopted the name Gunner. Alongside other unique beings like the vampiric Velcoro, the pieced-together Patchwork, the wolf-man Wolf Pack, the mummified Aten, the serpentine Medusa, and the amphibian Bogman, Gunner operates under Captain Lucius Hunter as part of M-Team Alpha, also known as the Creature Commandos.
Creature Commandos Season 2
The newly announced second season for “Creature Commandos” is now part of a DC Studios lineup that encompasses James Gunn’s “Superman” film (releasing July 11, 2025), the second installment of “Peacemaker” (TBA in 2025), the movie “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” (June 26, 2026), “Clayface” (Sept. 11, 2026), and the animated film “Dynamic Duo” featuring the Robins (June 30, 2028). As for titles yet to be scheduled, they include the films “The Authority”, “Swamp Thing”, and “Batman: The Brave and the Bold”; in television, the DC Universe will grow with HBO’s “Lanterns”, “Waller”, “Booster Gold”, and the series “Paradise Lost” – reminiscent of “Game of Thrones”, set on Themyscira, home of the Amazons (a location hinted at in “Creature Commandos”).
The release date for season 2 hasn’t been announced yet, and no cast members have been officially confirmed. Apart from Grillo, Varma, Chao, Gunn, Harbour, Tudyk, Bakalova, and Davis, season 1 includes Steve Agee as John Economos, Peter Serafinowicz as Victor Frankenstein, Stephanie Beatriz as Aisla MacPherson, Linda Cardellini as Elizabeth Bates, Gregg Henry as Myron Mazursky, and Benjamin Byron Davis as the Batman antagonist Rupert Thorne.

Animation, mentioned, “Due to James’ extraordinary creativity and the exceptional skill of our artists, DC fans have developed a fond affection for this fresh batch of heroes. We are thrilled to continue this exciting journey alongside Max. If you’re craving more monsters, then brace yourselves, because there’s more where that came from!
