As a seasoned observer of the entertainment world, I must admit that my initial skepticism about live-action adaptations of anime series was not unfounded. The history of these adaptations has been littered with disappointments, leaving fans yearning for the original’s magic. However, the recent live-action film adaptation of “Oshi no Ko: The Final Act” has managed to buck this trend and deliver a product that resonates deeply within the industry.
Live-action and anime aren’t typically a good blend, with exceptions being few like the successful adaptation of One Piece. However, most live-action adaptations of popular anime series haven’t lived up to their animated counterparts, often leaving fans disappointed. Yet, despite this trend, creators Aka Akasaka and Mengo Yokoyari have given their approval for a live-action film based on their manga, Oshi no Ko. The live-action movie, titled Oshi no Ko: The Final Act, was released in Japan on December 20th. Toei is handling the distribution of the film, while Amazon streamed the TV series worldwide through its Prime Video service.
Since Yokoyari was continuously working on the series while the live-action adaptation was underway, it fell upon Akasaka to oversee production. Despite not being physically present, Yokoyari was pleased with the end result, feeling that the team had accurately portrayed the manga. Akasaka commended the live-action crew for their dedication to his work and that of Yokoyari. He also expressed that he felt the film held a more genuine atmosphere because it revolved around the entertainment industry, being crafted by individuals within that field. In an interview, Akasaka stated, “I believe the live-action adaptation of Oshi no Ko carries a more authentic tone due to its perspective from the entertainment industry.” At this point, there’s been no announcement regarding if Amazon will stream “The Final Act” on Prime Video.
Why Oshi no Ko is Perfect For Live-Action
In the world of “Oshi no Ko,” I’ve found myself immersed in the tumultuous landscape of the entertainment industry. While it does include a sprinkle of enchanting elements and magical realism, the portrayal of this realm has always felt raw and authentic. Despite offering adorable idol scenarios that fans anticipated from promotional materials, the series doesn’t shy away from revealing the crushing weight idols bear in maintaining their image and the arduous journey to break into the industry. The manga also sheds light on a chilling aspect: stalking, highlighting the very real dangers when fans become excessively obsessed with celebrities.
It could be contended that Akasaka and Yokoyari fall within the realm of the entertainment industry given their roles as manga artists. However, they do not actively participate in movie-making or pop idol culture. Instead, the cast and crew responsible for the “Oshi no Kō” live-action series and “The Final Act” are directly engaged with the entertainment world. These individuals found themselves empathizing with their characters as they grappled with the same challenges portrayed in the stories – the relentless pursuit of success and the struggle to meet high expectations.
Akasaka mentioned that the authenticity in the live-action show and film comes from the actors and directors having personally experienced the emotions of their characters. This gives the production a unique, meta-textual quality as it portrays the world of acting and filmmaking. While authenticity doesn’t guarantee quality, it does add depth to the manga’s themes, making it a more captivating watch compared to typical anime live-action adaptations.
