As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that the gaming landscape is ever-evolving and Microsoft’s recent moves are no exception. The news of The Outer Worlds 2 gracing the PS5 alongside its Xbox counterpart on day one doesn’t exactly shock me anymore.
At The Game Awards this month, both Microsoft and Obsidian Entertainment revealed that when “The Outer Worlds 2” launches next year, it will be simultaneously available for PS5. This news came as a surprise to some, but considering Microsoft’s recent actions, perhaps it wasn’t so unexpected in the end. The reason being, it’s common knowledge that Microsoft plans to expand the availability of its games beyond just Xbox, and bring them to more platforms instead.
According to journalist Jez Corden, it’s becoming increasingly unusual for first-party Microsoft games to exclusively launch on Xbox consoles. In a recent episode of the Xbox Two podcast, Corden shared that while he doesn’t have access to Microsoft’s complete release schedule, he has been told that exceptions will be made for Xbox console exclusivity. Instead, it seems that most first-party Microsoft games are intended to also be available on PlayStation consoles, unless there are unexpected issues like lack of development time or resources.
2025 is expected to bring “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” to PlayStation 5, but aside from this title and the previously mentioned “The Outer Worlds 2”, Microsoft has not yet made any official declarations about additional forthcoming ports.
