As a long-time fan who’s seen the rise and fall (and rise again) of Sega, I can confidently say that their 2024 lineup is nothing short of breathtaking! From “Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth” to “Sonic x Shadow Generations,” it seems like Sega has been on a roll this year. Now, hearing about the possibility of a Game Pass-style subscription service from Sega? That’s music to my ears!
2024 has been an absolutely stellar year for me as a gamer, with Sega knocking it out of the park left and right! From the critically acclaimed “Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth” to the fantastical “Metaphor: ReFantazio”, the timeless charm of “Persona 3 Reload”, the epic adventure of “Unicorn Overlord”, the intense storyline of “Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance”, and the iconic team-up in “Sonic x Shadow Generations”, their lineup this year has been nothing short of phenomenal! With such a rich library, it’s no surprise that they’re considering offering a subscription service – a move that could be a game changer for publishers in today’s dynamic market.
Indeed, it appears that Sega is seriously contemplating the implementation of a service similar to Microsoft’s Game Pass. This was disclosed by Shuji Utsumi, the president and COO of Sega, during an interview with BBC. He expressed his fascination with such a possibility, stating that Sega is currently assessing potential opportunities in this area.
He added, “We’re thinking something – and discussing something – we cannot disclose right now.”
Absolutely, Sega hasn’t been the pioneer when it comes to offering a subscription service; many companies in the industry have attempted this before. However, given their robust library of games, there’s a possibility they might fare better with such a service compared to some recent attempts. The key challenge will be determining whether their offering can outperform others that have come before.
At present, with regard to games, Sega is working on several significant projects that are under development, such as Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, Virtua Fighter, Project Century, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Streets of Rage Revolution, and others.
