As a long-time Fortnite and Halo fan, I must say that this turn of events has left me feeling like I just got shot by the Covenant while trying to grab a Christmas present. I remember the excitement when Master Chief first appeared in the Item Shop back in 2021, and the thrill of unlocking the Matte Black style on my Xbox Series X/S.
It’s unfortunate to inform you that you won’t be able to acquire the Black Master Chief skin in Fortnite during your Christmas vacation.
Veteran gamers may recall that back in March 2021, the principal character from Microsoft’s Halo franchise, Master Chief, made an appearance in the Fortnite merchandise store.
Previously, donning the Master Chief costume during a game on either Xbox Series X or S would have earned you a Matte Black outfit style as a reward.
In the here and now, we find ourselves once more with Master Chief appearing in the merchandise store, leaving players speculating if the Matte Black skin is still obtainable for those who select Master Chief on the Xbox Series X/S.
After noticing various discussions about it on the internet, the team behind Fortnite (Epic Games) has taken to social media to provide some clarity.
It’s not good news if you were hoping to get the Matte Black Master Chief skin this Christmas.
On the platform once known as Twitter, Epic announced that the Matte Black style for The Master Chief can no longer be obtained.
As a devoted gamer excitedly looking forward to the future, I’d like to share that this exclusive style is reserved for those lucky souls who bought the outfit and have been gaming on an Xbox Series X|S before the end of 2024.
If you’re purchasing the green variant of the product for the first time today, you’ve missed out on the Matte Black promotion as it was available prior to this.

The current situation goes against the initial statement made about the Matte Black skin in 2021, where Epic Games indicated that playing a single match on an Xbox Series X|S at any point in the future would grant the Matte Black style with no time restrictions. However, it seems there might be a misunderstanding or update regarding this unlocking process.
In a surprising turn of events, Epic has decided to honor refund requests for those who recently purchased the Matte Black style on December 24th, 2024, due to their earlier promise not being fulfilled regarding future distribution.
Epic stated, “If they’d rather, Master Chief’s purchases made today can be returned without using a Return Ticket. They can contact Player Support to do so, and here’s the link for that purpose.
If the black Master Chief skin doesn’t appeal to you, then you can find the green version in the Item Shop right now for 1,500 V-Bucks.
Additionally, there’s an opportunity to win the Master Chief Bundle, priced at 2,600 V-Bucks. This package comes with a green character skin, the Gravity Hammer Pickaxe, the UNSC Pelican glider, the Battle Legend back bling, and the Lil’ Warthog Emote along with its Traversal.
It’s unfortunate if you were hoping for the Matte Black Master Chief costume, but don’t let that discourage you! If you simply wish to emulate the legendary Halo character, feel free to opt for the green version instead.
As an enthusiastic Fortnite follower, I can’t wait to share the freshest updates as they become available. Mark your calendars for February 2025, when Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 2 is set to launch – stay tuned for more details on this exciting new chapter!
