Russell T Davies hints at next TV drama as he reveals inspiration

As a long-time admirer of British television, I find myself captivated by the work of Russell T Davies, a creative powerhouse who has left an indelible mark on my small screen experiences. His ability to tackle complex social issues with sensitivity and wit is nothing short of remarkable.

Managing Doctor Who isn’t a walk in the park, but showrunner Russell T Davies has subtly suggested he’s been brainstorming concepts for a potential future TV series.

In a recent conversation on the Talk Art podcast, hosted by Russell Tovey and Robert Diament, Davies reminisced about his time spent in Manchester and his popular series, Queer as Folk, from the past.

Davis shared that he divides his time between Swansea and Manchester, mentioning that the majority of his work is created in Manchester. “Doctor Who is based in Wales, but when we worked on Years & Years, everything else was done up in Manchester,” he explained.

Regarding his time spent in Manchester, not far from where Queer as Folk was produced, Davies expressed his affection for the city by stating, “I simply adore this spot; I find it stunning.

Lately, I’ve found myself spending quite a bit of time on Canal Street,” Davies mentioned, as he felt it was past due for him to write about the place once more.

As a passionate movie critic, I can’t help but acknowledge the turbulent state of our society, particularly concerning issues like trans rights, queer rights, gay rights, and women’s rights. When asked about potential TV projects brewing in my mind, I couldn’t resist sharing that indeed, there are concepts simmering, stories waiting to be told that reflect and resonate with the chaos and change our world is experiencing today.

Known for penning scripts and producing shows like Doctor Who, this individual also garnered recognition for projects such as Years and Years, It’s a Sin, A Very English Scandal, and Nolly.

Currently, Davies is deeply immersed in the ongoing science fiction series that’s preparing for its Christmas special episode. This upcoming episode, written by ex-showrunner Steven Moffat, features Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor and Nicola Coughlan as Joy embarking on a thrilling new journey involving a hotel that travels through time.

The episode presents Joy, portrayed by Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton, Derry Girls), who arrives at a London hotel in 2024, but finds her peaceful visit far from typical.

When Joy unveils a hidden entrance to the Time Hotel, she encounters peril, dinosaurs, and the Doctor. However, an ominous scheme is being put into motion worldwide, perfectly timed for Christmas.

What’s the latest on the Doctor’s whereabouts? There seems to be some trouble brewing in Joy’s hotel room. An old foe of the Doctor’s is lurking, and it appears that the fate of human history could hinge on this encounter. Could the Doctor manage to rescue Christmas simultaneously across all locations?
