As a lifestyle expert with a heart for people and a background in grief counseling, I cannot help but be moved by the tragic news of the passing of Zach Jones. At just 41 years old, his life was cut short by colorectal cancer, leaving behind a wife and young son. This story serves as a stark reminder of the importance of regular check-ups and screenings for early detection and treatment of cancer.
The ESPN family has lost a beloved member.
On December 22, research manager Zach Jones, tragically passed away after a prolonged struggle of nearly two years against metastatic colorectal cancer. He was only 41 years old. This sad news was shared by Anchor Randy Scott.
Randy mentioned during the December 23rd SportsCenter that you may not have personally noticed him on your screens, but you’ve likely observed his contributions in our live golf broadcasts, women’s college basketball coverage, or any of our SportsCenter shows.
Back in 2010, when I first joined ESPN, Zach didn’t just start his career there – he also found love and started a family! This place holds a special place in his heart, as it’s where he tied the knot and welcomed new family members.
As a devoted follower, I can’t help but express my deep affection. It’s Amber, my cherished wife, whom I adore beyond words, and then there’s Silas, my beloved son, who recently celebrated his 10th birthday. Tragically, just three days before Christmas, he lost his father.
As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but remember the encounter I had with Zach in the office cafeteria a couple of weeks prior to his passing. He wasn’t just optimistic; there was a deep sense of contemplation in his demeanor too – a blend of hope and introspection that left an indelible mark on me.
Randy remarked, “He mentioned only wanting his family to settle comfortably following their relocation to Texas.” Randy struggled hard for him. Now he can finally rest. We adore you, friend.
Many of Zach’s colleagues also took a moment to share their remembrances of him.
For quite some time, I had the pleasure of collaborating with Zach. Truly an amazing, cheerful individual,” was expressed on X, previously Twitter, December 23. “Blessed to have known Zach as he finds peace in heaven following his valiant struggle. Sending my prayers to his wife and son.
Another added, “This one hits really hard. Loved working with Zach; always humble, smart, caring, a subtle wit, hard working. R.I.P.”
And one X user reflected on the death of his own father as he shared his hopes for Zach’s son Silas.
When I was 13, I sadly lost my father to cancer. It might not be apparent to him right now, but if his father was the kind of man it seems he was, this young boy will recall their short time together vividly for many years, perhaps even when he becomes a father himself.
Over the last two years, Zach’s spouse, Amber, has been meticulously recording his struggle against cancer. She expressed her appreciation towards Randy and the entire ESPN team for their thoughtful comments.
As a devoted admirer, I’ll always cherish and yearn for Zach. Yesterday, I petitioned heaven for his return to Jesus. On Instagram, Dec 23rd, I expressed my feelings with these words. I’m deeply grateful to @randyscott for his heartfelt tribute to Zach. ESPN has been an exceptional platform where Zach thrived in his career.
