As a lifelong DC fan, I’ve seen my fair share of Superman adaptations, and I must admit, the inclusion of Krypto in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie has me both excited and skeptical. On one hand, Krypto brings a unique charm and nostalgia to the table that I can’t help but appreciate. On the other hand, his live-action appearances have been few and far between, and when they do appear, they often seem more like an Easter egg than a fully fleshed-out character.
James Gunn’s Superman trailer showcases Krypto the Superdog, a controversial figure in the upcoming DCU. The Superman preview offers a tantalizing sneak peek into Gunn’s future projects, with David Corenswet portraying Superman grappling with numerous challenges and tribulations. Thankfully, Krypto is there to offer Kal-El comfort during these tough times. Prior to the release of the Superman trailer, Gunn hinted at Krypto’s appearance – he even appeared in one of the initial promotional images. Although Krypto adds an endearing appeal and warmth to the Superman trailer, some viewers might find it difficult to accept his role within the movie.
Krypto Is Hard To Pull Off In Live-Action
For many years, Krypto the Superdog has been a staple character in DC Comics, but his presence in live-action adaptations has been scarce due to the challenges of portraying him realistically on screen. Translating Krypto’s unique abilities and characteristics into a live-action format proves to be quite complex, as seen by the differences between his animated roles, such as the one he played in this year’s DC animated movie “DC’s League of Super Pets,” which showcased his superhero prowess with charm and imagination, and his live-action appearances that often require significant alterations to bring him to life on screen.
In the television series Smallville, Shelby, Clark Kent’s dog, was part of scientific experiments and showed the same loyalty one might expect from Superman’s canine companion. The name “Krypto” that Clark gave to his dog served more as an Easter egg than a formal name. On Superman & Lois, Krypto didn’t make an appearance until the final episode of the last season, and even then, Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman was in his elderly years, with most of his Superman life already lived out, leaving Krypto as a faithful but powerless companion. James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film represents the first real endeavor to accurately bring Krypto, Superdog, into live-action and integrate him into Superman’s world.
Gunn’s Krypto If A Fitting DC Comics Homage
In my perspective, Gunn’s portrayal of Krypto, Superman’s super-powered pooch, is nothing short of a homerun. The sneak peek of the ‘Superman’ trailer presents an intriguing scene where Superman, visibly injured and spent, calls out to Krypto in the Arctic, whistling him over. With a powerful tug on his cape, our canine companion faithfully leads Superman through the snowy landscape, fulfilling his master’s request to “Take me home.
In the comics, it’s clear that Krypto possesses super-strength and super-speed, demonstrated by his ability to dash through snow as swiftly as a snowplow. He shares many powers with David Corenswet’s Superman, and in addition, he sports a flowing red cape adorned with the S-shield, much like Superman. In Tyler Gunn’s interpretation of Krypto for Superman, however, his version doesn’t talk like a regular dog. Instead, it effectively portrays the super-pet’s power and essence. The breed of dog chosen by Gunn to play Krypto differs from the Golden Retriever often depicted in comics, but DCU Krypto may also serve as a tribute to some of Gunn’s personal pets. This personal touch could either win viewers over or be perceived as an arrogant deviation from comic book tradition.
Superman’s Krypto Will Either Be Great or A Major Flaw
In James Gunn’s past comic book adaptations, animal characters and companions play significant roles. Examples include Rocket Raccoon from the Guardians of the Galaxy series, Weasel in The Suicide Squad and Creature Commandos. Since Gunn has demonstrated a talent for turning anthropomorphic animals into popular figures, it could mean positive responses to Krypto’s appearance in Superman, even though Krypto is non-verbal.
On the other hand, the fact that every preceding live-action Superman property has gone out of its way to modify Krypto (if not omit him) also speaks to the inherent silliness of the character at a conceptual level. Adorable or not, a super-powered dog with a cape reads like a very goofy element in a superhero movie that’s trying to have genuine stakes and challenges for Superman. If Gunn can’t work the same magic with Krypto the Superdog that he did with Groot, Rocket Raccoon, and Weasel, Krypto might end up being a major Achille’s Heel of his Superman film. Superman himself might be the most iconic superhero in existence, but Krypto the Superdog in (what is, for all intents and purposes) his live-action debut could either win over or annoy audiences.
Superman will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
