Deadpool Director Reveals Surprising Payday for First Ryan Reynolds Movie

As a follower who has keenly observed the twists and turns of Hollywood’s intricate web, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for Tim Miller, the unsung hero behind Deadpool’s meteoric rise to fame. Here’s a man who, with his vision and dedication, transformed a cult favorite into a global phenomenon, yet was compensated with a six-figure salary that, in retrospect, seems like pocket change compared to the film’s staggering earnings.

Initially, Deadpool wasn’t synonymous with blockbuster success; in fact, Tim Miller, who directed the first movie in the Deadpool trilogy, was surprisingly underpaid for the project. During an interview with Steve Weintraub from Collider at CCXP in São Paulo, Brazil, Miller disclosed that he earned a six-figure salary. Remarkably, the 2016 film ultimately grossed over $780 million globally, making Miller’s earnings seem insignificant in comparison.

Tim Miller stated he was given $225,000 for directing Deadpool. He acknowledged that it might seem like a substantial amount, but considering two years of work, it’s not overly generous in his opinion. However, he emphasized that he is incredibly thankful for the opportunity and believes it’s only appropriate to express gratitude when you’re a first-time director.

Nevertheless, Miller remains modest about the achievement, recognizing his role in turning Deadpool from a beloved comic book character into a worldwide cultural phenomenon. Yet, he did acknowledge that given the merchandising revenue generated by the franchise over time, he could have negotiated for a share of those sales. Frankly, who wouldn’t under such circumstances?

He expressed, “What I’m experiencing is sheer pride.” He continued, “Each time I stroll through the aisles at CCXP and see all the Deadpool action figures, I can’t help but think they wouldn’t exist without our film. And I feel incredibly lucky to have contributed to such an incredible project.

Despite Miller’s ongoing success, notably his creation of the Amazon Prime series “Secret Level,” now in its second season, regrettably, our paths didn’t align with Ryan Reynolds on the Deadpool sequels due to creative discrepancies.

In a past interview, Miller stated that it was apparent that Ryan aspired to lead the company. He has managed in this manner effectively as a director, but I cannot. I don’t believe every creative choice can be discussed; there are simply too many to consider. Therefore, Ryan serves as the symbol of the franchise, and he was the most crucial part of it. If he chooses to maintain control, then he will do so.

It’s intriguing to speculate about how differently Deadpool 2 might have been if Tim Miller had stayed on. In fact, the director of Terminator: Dark Fate has offered a glimpse into what could have transpired by expressing his intention to expand Morena Baccarin’s character Vanessa’s screen time, delving deeper into her relationship with Wade Wilson / Deadpool, and ultimately having her transform into Copycat. Miller also wanted Ben Grimm (the Thing from the Fantastic Four) to feature in a fight scene between Deadpool and the Juggernaut. Although this didn’t come to fruition, fans did get a taste of crossover action with the Fantastic Four when Chris Evans reprised his role as the Human Torch in Deadpool and Wolverine.
