As a lifelong devotee of cinema and television, I’ve seen my fair share of series that left me scratching my head at their endings. But none have been as frustratingly enigmatic as the saga of Dexter Morgan. The latest chapter, Dexter: New Blood, was a rollercoaster of emotions, leaving fans like me in a state of disbelief and confusion.
The creator of “Dexter: New Blood,” Clyde Phillips, recently spoke out about the backlash following Dexter Morgan’s death in the original series. Crafting endings for ongoing stories, such as TV shows or film franchises, can be particularly challenging. After investing years into developing a story, shaping characters, and creating various arcs, it’s crucial to deliver a satisfying conclusion. Sometimes creators aim for the unexpected, other times they cater to fan expectations, and sometimes they believe that what fans truly desire is an unpredictable ending. The intricacies of this decision are not lost on any series more so than “Dexter,” which has experienced two controversial endings among its viewers. Now, a follow-up series titled “Dexter: Resurrection” will attempt to wrap up the story for a third time.
The TV series “Dexter,” broadcasted by Showtime, stands out as their most successful production with a significant lead over other shows, and it’s widely recognized as one of the most popular shows overall. This popularity has led to several Dexter spin-offs being developed, including one centered around the Trinity Killer. Fans are deeply invested in the character of Dexter Morgan and would rather he didn’t disappear, but if he must, they seek a conclusive resolution.
In a turn that left fans unsettled, Dexter: New Blood portrayed Dexter as a serial killer who killed an innocent police officer and attempted to escape Iron Lake with his son. However, Harrison, Dexter’s son, came to understand that his father’s so-called “noble” acts of justice were actually causing more harm than good. Eventually, Dexter acknowledged the many innocent lives lost due to his actions and threatened to let his son kill him. In a shocking twist, Harrison shot Dexter, leaving him to bleed out in the snow. This grim ending was short-lived, as it was later revealed in Dexter: Original Sin that some doctors had managed to save Dexter’s life!
Why Dexter Died in Dexter: New Blood
Initially, the showrunner of “Dexter: New Blood”, Clyde Phillips, never intended for Dexter to survive. In interviews during the 2022 finale, he confirmed that Dexter was indeed dead and had no intentions of reviving him in a dream-like scenario. However, after observing fan reactions, Phillips admitted that the ending might not have been as impactful as intended. Later on, he disclosed to The Hollywood Reporter that he chose to end Michael C. Hall’s portrayal of Dexter because he only had him for one season and didn’t wish to leave any room for ambiguity about the character’s fate again.
When Phillips penned the final episode of “New Blood,” a record-breaking viewer favorite on Showtime, the internet exploded with reactions. People were deeply invested in Dexter and Michael C. Hall’s characters, and this was evident in their response to Dexter’s demise. Phillips recounts, “At that time, I considered placing ads saying, ‘I had Michael C. Hall for only one year.’ During the production of “New Blood,” I worked with him for just a year. […] I didn’t want him to end up in prison or vanish into obscurity, so I chose to be daring with the finale. The internet was not pleased with my choice.
Indeed, with a sense of dissatisfaction, Phillips and Michael C. Hall strove to devise a means to revive Dexter’s character. Moreover, they were tasked with inventing an engaging narrative for Dexter to navigate following his revelation as a serial killer to the public and the tragic killing of a police officer. Somehow, they succeeded in this endeavor, and will share that tale next year in Dexter: Resurrection.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’ve always looked forward to the captivating world of Dexter. I was deeply engrossed during the first four seasons, but I had to take a step back for the original season eight ending, as it wasn’t under the creative guidance of its original showrunner. However, from what I’ve gathered about New Blood, it seems like lessons have been learned.
In the interim, enthusiasts of Dexter can prepare themselves with a fresh prequel series titled “Dexter: Original Sin.” Although it is a prequel, it includes some contemporary scenes which link it to “New Blood” and “Resurrection.” Additionally, Michael C. Hall reprises his role as narrator, providing fans with additional doses of Dexter’s clever narration.
