As a movie enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of comedy from the golden era to the streaming revolution, I must say that the announcement of Happy Gilmore 2 has left me absolutely “Gilmore”-able! The original film was a gem in my cinematic journey, and the prospect of revisiting this iconic character and his eccentric world is truly exciting.
On Wednesday, Adam Sandler and Netflix surprised fans with a sneak peek of an unanticipated holiday gift – a trailer for the sequel of Happy Gilmore. Sandler shared a 30-second preview on his Instagram account, expressing his season’s greetings by saying “Wishing everyone a ‘Happy Chanukah! Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! And Happy Gilmore to all!!!’
The video didn’t reveal too many details, yet it did feature Adam Sandler returning to play golf. Additionally, Julie Bowen reappeared as Virginia Venit, Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin, and NFL star Travis Kelce made an appearance in some capacity. This upcoming sequel has been more than two decades since the original, but it continues to be one of Sandler’s most cherished films. Here’s hoping Netflix can deliver a worthy follow-up that meets expectations.

The sequel to “Happy Gilmore” has been in development since April, and for many fans, the recent teaser trailer makes the project feel more tangible. This sneak peek was released on a significant day for Netflix as they are airing two live NFL games this Christmas. Filming for “Happy Gilmore 2” took place from September of this year until December 10th, indicating that post-production is now underway. As of now, Netflix has not announced a release date.
1996 saw the debut of “Happy Gilmore,” a film starring Adam Sandler as the title character, who is a young man with a passion for hockey but hindered by his quick temper and poor skating abilities from pursuing his dream professionally. Struggling financially, he discovers that his slapshot has a surprising aptitude for golf and manages to enter a PGA tournament, where his uncouth behavior conflicts with the refined customs of the sport.
In the initial film, Bowen portrayed a public relations manager who developed romantic feelings for Happy, and it appears they’ve remained a couple since then. The trailer hints at Happy’s consistency – he continues to play golf in his distinct hockey-themed sportswear and maintains his lack of manners on the course. McDonald returns as Shooter McGavin, Happy’s fiercest competitor, suggesting there are lingering conflicts between them.
Additional cast members for the upcoming film are comedian Nick Swardson, actress Margaret Qualley, filmmaker Benny Safdie, singer Bad Bunny, and rapper Kid Cudi (also known as Scott Mescudi in movies). Similar to the initial announcement, this movie was co-written by Adam Sandler and Tim Herlihy. Kyle Newacheck is in charge of directing, while Dennis Dugan serves as an executive producer.
As of now, we don’t have a specified launch date for “Happy Gilmore 2”, but rest assured, it’s coming soon! Currently, you can catch up with the original film on Hulu and Tubi.
