As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of TV sitcoms, I must say that the Gavin & Stacey Christmas special was a delightful surprise. The way the creators managed to keep the fate of Nessa’s proposal a mystery for five long years and then deliver such an unexpected twist was nothing short of genius.
Fans of Gavin & Stacey have long wondered about Smithy’s reaction to Nessa’s unexpected proposal, a question left unanswered for five years. However, during the 2024 Christmas special, the truth has finally been unfolded.
In the final act, Smithy (James Corden) nervously prepares for his wedding day, but it’s not Nessa (Ruth Jones) waiting at the altar. Instead, he and his fiancée Sonia (Laura Aikman) are the ones getting married.
Initially, the circumstances leading up to this point remain unclear, but eventually, Nessa opens up completely about everything to Stacey (Joanna Page). This intimate conversation takes place following the arrival of the Shipman and West families in Billericay, where they share their deepest feelings.
Nessa clarifies that when she proposed, Smithy found himself speechless. For a brief while, he examined the ring she handed him, evidently grappling with his next step, seemingly uncertain.
Unluckily, just as Gavin (Mathew Horne) was about to answer, he stepped out through the front door, interrupting the situation. This led Nessa to swiftly concoct a witty explanation for her unusual position on one knee.
In a bid to cover-up the botched proposal, she tells Gavin that she is simply practicing her Cossack dancing for an imminent gig that she has been booked for – and by all accounts, she nails a practical demonstration!
Actually, when Stacey questions Gavin about his lack of suspicion regarding odd occurrences, he reveals to her that he was captivated by “exceptional Cossack dances” that he had come across.
If you’re not already aware, the Cossack dance is a traditional Ukrainian dance known for its difficulty. Dancers execute swift jumps and kicks while maintaining a low squatting stance.
If you’re interested in an example, here’s Strictly Come Dancing’s Neil Jones giving it a try in a 2016 episode of It Takes Two.
Unfortunately, we didn’t witness Nessa doing a Cossack dance, yet her mastery of this complex art form aligns perfectly with the enigmatic quality of her character, who appears to have had quite an intriguing past – as suggested by numerous stories she shared.
Following five years of anticipation, even the most ardent Gavin & Stacey devotee might not have foreseen this as the direct consequence of the grand proposal. Yet, it creates such a charming scene that we can’t imagine it unfolding differently.
