McDonald’s x Evangelion Drops Mind-Bending Anime Crossover: Watch

As a lifelong fan of both anime and fast food, I must say this McDonald’s x Evangelion collaboration has left me absolutely stunned! Growing up with the original NGE series, I never thought I would see Shinji, Asuka, or Rei in a Happy Meal box. The idea of these complex characters taking a break from saving humanity to enjoy some hash brown burgers and teriyaki doubles is just too absurdly entertaining for words.

Previously, we’ve seen the Straw Hat Pirates clash with the Z-Fighters, Hello Kitty go head-to-head with Amuro’s Gundam unit, and Marvel’s Merc With a Mouth join forces with UA Academy’s Symbol of Peace. The anime universe has never been shy about creating some outlandish crossovers in the past, but this latest collaboration could very well be the most astonishing one yet. Although we have discussed how the NERV pilots from Evangelion are now contributing to McDonald’s menu items, a new animated short has emerged that demonstrates just how incredible this crossover may become – potentially earning a place among the most improbable anime collaborations of our generation.

In the late 1990s, Neon Genesis Evangelion burst onto the anime scene, an unlikely pairing with fast food mascot Ronald McDonald. Known for delving deep into the minds of its characters and offering some of the most intellectually stimulating battles in mech anime history, this franchise has endured well beyond its initial TV debut.

Evangelion Burgers Have Landed

The exciting new collaboration in Japan is now underway, giving “Evangelion” enthusiasts an exclusive chance to savor three distinctive menu additions. Additionally, unique toys are available that depict the Eva Units being reimagined as McDonald’s products. Japanese diners can enjoy a hash brown burger with garlic mayo, a new Mexican chicken burger, and a double teriyaki burger. Given the theme of “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” it’s unlikely this collaboration will result in a Happy Meal. Regrettably, there has been no announcement regarding whether this partnership will extend to North America for fans over here.

Digging Into This Anime Partnership

Interestingly, contrary to what one might expect, the recently released video wasn’t produced by Studio Khara, which is now the hub for all things related to Evangelion. After the disbandment of Studio Gainax, Hideaki Anno and Khara have been leading the way in all things NERV. This collaboration, however, was created using pre-existing footage from the recent anime films centered around the EVA pilots, along with some clever re-editing.

Although there’s no new Evangelion anime in development at the moment, creator Hideaki Anno is venturing into a fresh mech-themed universe in 2025 with Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. This upcoming series will mark Anno’s return to a world of teenage mech pilots, and fans are eagerly anticipating similarities and differences from his work on the Evangelion series.
