Every DCU Character and Franchise That’s Referenced in Creature Commandos’ Episode 5

As a long-time follower of DC comics and animated series, I must say that the latest episode of Creature Commandos has certainly piqued my interest. The blend of Greek mythology and modern-day intrigue is both fascinating and intriguing. It’s like watching a history lesson disguised as an action-packed adventure.

In the latter part of “Creature Commandos”, the storyline primarily revolves around the titular monster team and their tasks in Pokolistan for the DC Universe’s first TV show. This implies that Episode 5 delves deeper into the enigma surrounding Princess Illana (portrayed by Maria Bakalova) rather than meandering through nostalgia or disclosing how other DC characters and brands fit into James Gunn and Peter Safran’s emerging cinematic universe. However, the recent episode of this animated series subtly suggests potential links between ongoing DCU projects and the broader universe.

Wonder Woman’s Greek Connections

Episode 5 of Creature Commandos commences with Rick Flag Sr., portrayed by Frank Grillo, and Eric Frankenstein, voiced by David Harbour, observing Aisla MacPherson, whose voice is provided by Stephanie Beatriz. In the previous episode, MacPherson shared with Amanda Waller, played by Viola Davis, that Circe’s ominous prophecies were accurate. Given MacPherson’s deep understanding of Themyscira’s heritage and lore, Flag needs to show that there’s a flaw in the professor’s predictions if he aims to rescue Illana.

While observing MacPherson, Flag observes peculiar behavior in the classroom, such as flirting with a student and casually mentioning that Themyscira is known for its lesbian population. Earlier, though, before MacPherson’s outburst about the Amazonians’ sexuality, a student had shared some notable artifacts from Paradise Island, including the Antigone statue and Apollonia’s poetry.

In Greek mythology, Antigone is the daughter of Oedipus, who’s sentenced to death after defying the King of Thebes, Creon. Creon had forbidden Antigone’s brother, Polynices, from getting a proper burial, but Antigone decided the laws of gods were above the laws of people. So, she ensured her brother would receive the appropriate rights; in turn, Apollonia was a famous trade colony in Ancient Greece, where Albania now exists.

These two mentions underline how the Amazons in the DCU retain their Greek mythology origins, having interacted on some level with Apollonia and valuing a brave woman such as Antigone. More importantly, though, is that Themyscira has been mainly trading art with the outside world, so the warrior traditions of the Amazons might still be a secret in the DCU. That wouldn’t be a shock since Creature Commandos has underlined how Paradise Island has just recently been unveiled to the world.

Did Batman’s Clayface Die in Creature Commandos?

In the show, MacPherson’s peculiar actions are due to Clayface, a character voiced by Alan Tudyk, masquerading as the professor. Known as one of Batman’s toughest adversaries in the comics, Clayface is set to star in his own film within the DC Universe. The fact that Clayface had previously appeared in the Creature Commandos, before his solo movie was announced, underscores how far ahead Gunn is with planning the DCU’s narrative. However, the confrontation between Clayface and Eric Frankenstein has stirred some debate about continuity.

To keep himself from being suffocated by Clayface, Eric makes a gap in the wall, snatches some wires, and shockingly subdues the villain with electricity. Since Eric was reanimated by lightning, he has an inherent immunity to electric currents. However, Clayface transforms into a heap of splattered goo, but it’s uncertain if this means the villain is defeated for good as Clayface has shown remarkable resilience in the past. If Clayface perished at the hands of Eric Frankenstein, his upcoming film could potentially serve as a prequel to Creature Commandos. Here’s hoping Episode 6 sheds more light on the storyline.

New episodes of Creature Commandos hit MAX every Thursday until January 9, 2025.
