The King’s Christmas Day 2024 speech ratings revealed across multiple channels

As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for British royalty and a soft spot for Christmas traditions, I found this year’s Christmas Day broadcast particularly captivating. The King’s 2024 Christmas message, filmed from the Fitzrovia Chapel, was a poignant departure from the usual grandeur of royal palaces or estates.

Approximately 7 million people tuned in to various broadcasting stations to watch the King’s Christmas message on Christmas Day.

King Charles III continued the monarch’s annual Christmas message with a broadcast aired at 3 pm.

Based on BARB’s overnight statistics, approximately 6.82 million individuals tuned into the King’s message on BBC, ITV, BBC News, and Sky News collectively.

On Christmas Day 2024, the broadcast ranked as the third most popular program, trailing behind Gavin and Stacey’s Final Episode, which drew an audience of 12.32 million, and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, with 9.38 million viewers.

Instead of the usual broadcast from a royal residence or estate, this year’s King’s Christmas message was recorded at the Fitzrovia Chapel, a location that used to be a hospital chapel and is no longer the traditional setting for such messages.

It appears that the choice to shift the broadcast, which had been previously taped this month, stemmed from the king’s preference for a venue linked to healthcare services. This decision might be due to his diagnosis of cancer earlier in the year, as he’s currently receiving treatment.

For over ten years, the Christmas address had always been filmed at a royal palace or estate. However, for the first time, this year’s recording took place elsewhere.

In his 2024 Christmas address, King Charles commended the community’s efforts during the UK’s summer riots and expressed gratitude towards the medical professionals who have tended to him and the Princess of Wales in their battles with cancer this year.

Every year, Channel 4 chooses a different approach for Christmas Day programming, opting out of airing the King’s Speech and instead presenting its Annual Alternative Christmas Message.

2021 saw me attending an event, emceed by the hilarious and accomplished Chris McCausland, the comic and winner of Strictly Come Dancing. He passionately called for an end to the persistent issue of disability discrimination.
