As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for emotional storytelling and a soft spot for British television, I must say that Nicola Coughlan’s debut as Joy in the Doctor Who Christmas special, Joy to the World, was nothing short of captivating. The way her character’s sadness seeped through the cracks of her radiant smile was both heart-wrenching and awe-inspiring.
In the 2024 Christmas special, “Joy to the World,” Nicola Coughlan is set to make her Doctor Who debut for the first time. Reflecting on her character, writer Steven Moffat disclosed that a particularly moving line nearly didn’t make it into the final script.
On Christmas Day, the broadcast featured an adventure starring the Doctor, portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa, and Joy (played by Coughlan), where they tried to thwart Villengard’s plan to cultivate a star with devastating consequences for all mankind at the Time Hotel.
Discussing Doctor Who: Unleashed, the previous showrunner of Doctor Who, Moffat (who wrote the episode), noted that Joy’s sorrow is evident through her frequent smiling.
He said: “Joy is the kind of person who you know how sad they are from how often they smile. Really, really sad people are always putting a front up. They’re always smiling through it.”
Moffat commented: “A line in the script that almost didn’t make it, but I’m glad it did, is where the Doctor says, ‘I notice your smile, it’s like the lid on a simmering pot. You’re angry, you’re sad, and you’re always prepared for a confrontation.’
He mentioned that he found Nicola’s smile to be particularly radiant and unique, a trait he deeply desired for her.
I prefer her not to appear as someone always looking sad. Instead, it’s striking how she can portray sadness through her eyes, even when her mouth is smiling.
Previously, Moffat had hinted to fans that Coughlan, well-known for her work in Derry Girls and Bridgerton, was set to deliver a deeply moving performance, culminating in a poignant ending for Joy in this particular episode.
On Christmas Day, it was announced that the viewing figures for Doctor Who reached approximately 4.11 million people, as reported by BARB’s initial ratings.
It must be noted that this is not the full story as it doesn’t include viewers who will be watching on catch-up. This number is expected to rise when the seven-day consolidated viewing figures come in.
