As an avid follower of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga and someone who has witnessed its evolution over the years, I must say that the recent revelation about Aoi Todo’s vibraslap is simply ingenious! The way the creators have managed to keep Todo’s character relevant and powerful despite his physical limitations is truly commendable.
On December 25th, 2024, Volumes 29 and 30 of the “Jujutsu Kaisen” manga were published. The manga had concluded its run in Weekly Shonen Jump back in September 2024. The story concludes with Sukuna’s defeat, and the sorcerers are seen preparing to restore the fractured Jujutsu world, a result that Gojo had desired. The final volume features an epilogue spanning 16 pages, which spotlights four independent tales centered around Nobara Kugisaki, Yuko Ozawa, Panda, and Uraume. Furthermore, both volumes contain several illustrations, one of which offers insights into the source of inspiration for Todo’s vibraslap.
Among the beloved characters in “Jujutsu Kaisen”, Aoi Todo stands out. His introduction occurs during the Kyoto Goodwill Event Arc, where he swiftly earns a place among Yuji’s closest companions. As a formidable Grade 1 sorcerer, Todo offers vital assistance to Yuji in combat. Following an intense clash against Hanami during the Kyoto Goodwill Event Arc, they cross paths again in Shibuya, where they face Mahito, a foe more potent than Hanami. In this encounter, Todo loses his left hand and recedes from the narrative temporarily. Four years later, readers rejoice as he reappears, providing Yuji with the crucial boost he needs against Sukuna following Choso’s demise. However, upon his return, Todo manifests an unusual power.
Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 29 Reveals Todo’s Vibraslap Is Inspired By a Comedian
In an extra illustration, Gege Akutami draws a popular Japanese comedian, Jun Itoda. @f9x00 shares, “The guy in Vol 29 extras is presumed to be Jun Itoda. A Japanese comedian who used vibraslap in one of his gigs. He might’ve inspired Gege to add vibra slap tech for Todo.” Itoda performs tsukkomi, a traditional style of comedy in Japanese culture, in the comedy duo Speed Wagon.
After Todo’s cursed technique, Boogie Woogie requires clapping hands for activation, it seemed he wouldn’t conventionally be able to utilize it anymore. Following Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration technique, his Reverse Cursed Technique became ineffective since the technique reshapes its target’s soul. This suggested an end to his career as a Jujutsu sorcerer, but he reappears with a vibraslap attached to his left hand. Yuta Okkotsu assists Todo in refining the vibraslap, allowing him to return stronger than ever.
This instrument allows him to perform approximately 50 swaps per second. Todo changed the condition for activating his cursed technique from a clap to a metal piece hitting a wooden box. He also makes a binding vow to expand the range and targets of his technique if he limits the number of swaps per strike. Todo returns in Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 259 to lend Yuji a hand. After Sukuna uses his Divine Flame, Yuji is left alone on the battlefield and watches his brother, Choso, disintegrate in front of him.
Because Yuji can’t locate the others, he speculates that they too have become victims of Sukuna’s technique. As despair threatens to overwhelm him, Todo reappears to offer the support Yuji needs. Together for what seems like their final battle, Yuji and Todo confront the last antagonist. Furthermore, it is shown in Chapter 259 that Todo employed his Boogie Woogie to assist Yuta in defeating Kenjaku.
