As a long-time Batman fan, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the continuous delays in the release of The Batman 2. I remember waiting eagerly for Tim Burton’s Batman back in the ’80s and Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy in the ’00s, only to be left hanging yet again. It feels like a never-ending rollercoaster ride of anticipation and disappointment.
Oh dear, Bamtan! It’s quite a letdown for DC fans, isn’t it? As the year comes to an end, they’ve been hit with two pieces of unfortunate news about Batman movies. Reports suggest that both the DCU film The Brave and the Bold and Matt Reeves’ sequel The Batman: Part II are not expected to hit theaters for several more years. The delay in The Batman 2 has indeed been confirmed by DC Studios co-head and director of the upcoming Superman movie, James Gunn, as stated in his recent social media post.
Why Is The Batman 2 Release Date Being Delayed?
On his Threads account, Gunn answered (as he often does) a fan’s question about whether the rumor regarding the delay of The Batman: Part II was accurate. Gunn confirmed that it was true, explaining that the reason for the delay is because there isn’t yet a completed script (which followers of Gunn on this platform may already be aware). Matt [Reeves] is dedicated to producing the best film he can, and it’s difficult to predict exactly how long it will take to write a script. Once a finalized script exists, there are approximately two years for pre-production, filming, and post-production on major films.
This mirrors sentiments expressed by Gunn on several occasions over the festive period. He explicitly disputed claims regarding the script status of “The Batman 2,” stating that as of then, no first draft of the script had been written.
Troubling Signs for The Batman Universe
For those keeping count: The Batman: Part II is now set for release in October of 2027, which will be over five years since the first film’s release in March of 2022 – and over a decade since Reeves first came on board to transform Ben Affleck’s Batman DCEU film into the concept that became The Batman Universe. Reeves’ production has been all but cursed, with the first film’s production smashed in half by the arrival of the COVID pandemic, resulting in tricky edits, revisions, and reshoots to get the film done and release it into a theatrical market still limping its way back from ruin. The Hollywood Strikes of 2023 once again knocked Reeves’ planned production timeline off its original schedule, while many of the planned spinoffs (Gotham P.D., Arkham Asylum) have died in development. Behind the scenes, Robert Pattinson is moving on to do a Christopher Nolan movie next year, and co-star Jeffrey Wright admitted he hasn’t talked to Matt Reeves about the sequel “for a while.”
Recently, there’s been talk that Gunn’s upcoming DC Universe film franchise (starting with Superman next year) might be causing uncertainty for The Batman franchise. This situation may have become even more complex as The Penguin TV series has significantly boosted the popularity of The Batman franchise, transforming it into a successful multi-media premium brand – a level of achievement that the new DC Universe hasn’t yet matched.
It’s puzzling that Matt Reeves hasn’t come up with any script ideas or drafts for “The Batman: Part II” since 2022, despite the delays and planning for The Penguin series, which was originally intended to lead directly into the sequel. It appears more plausible that Reeves might be facing new limitations regarding character usage and storylines due to Gunn’s potential focus on Clayface in the DCU, or the wait-and-see approach of DC Studios regarding the commercial success of a lighter, family-friendly Superman movie. If Gunn’s film turns out to be successful, it seems challenging for Reeves to revive his dark, Noir “Batman” franchise as a blockbuster that doesn’t sell toys, clothes, or other merchandise in large quantities.
The Batman: Part II now has a release date of October 1, 2027.
