As a seasoned cinema enthusiast with over three decades of movie-going experiences under my belt, I can confidently say that the upcoming Toy Story 5 has me more excited than Buzz Lightyear zooming through the infinite expanse of space! The news of Tim Allen reprising his iconic role as Buzz and the promise of a clever narrative penned by Pixar’s masterminds is music to my ears.
Tim Allen, who’s returning to his famous character Buzz Lightyear in the upcoming Toy Story 5, has disclosed that he’s started recording his dialogues for the Pixar sequel. In an interview with Collider, the actor stated, “Indeed, I recently completed a five-hour session as Buzz, about a week back. It feels quite unusual to dive back in. I can’t divulge any information.” Allen shared that he’s recorded up to the third act so far and discussed the strategy for future recording sessions, which involves supplying the filmmakers with extra takes as the movie progresses. Although he couldn’t disclose plot details, Allen took a moment to appreciate the storyline.
He commented that the story is incredibly inventive… he’s not convinced it revolves around money. He believes their motivation was to make it successful, but not for monetary reasons. Without a fantastic script, they wouldn’t have initiated the project and wouldn’t have invited him and Tom Hanks.
The announcement for Toy Story 5 was made in February 2023, with Pixar’s creative head Pete Docter hinting that it would offer something unexpected to viewers. The movie brings back Woody, Buzz, and the rest of their well-known friends, set to hit theaters in June 2026. Andrew Stanton, a longtime Pixar artist who directed hits like Finding Nemo and WALL-E, is at the helm for this film. Although a plot summary hasn’t been disclosed yet, Stanton has hinted that the story revolves around the main characters grappling with the advent of technology, including tablets, smartphones, and a swarm of renegade Buzz Lightyear action figures.
Since the 90s, Toy Story has been Pixar’s leading series, with both Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 earning over $1 billion globally. However, the franchise faced a slight setback in 2022 when the spin-off film Lightyear underperformed. Starring Chris Evans as the voice of the “real” Buzz Lightyear in a complex movie-within-a-movie structure, Lightyear garnered only $226.4 million worldwide against a production budget of $200 million. In the wake of this, Director Docter acknowledged that Pixar had to engage in deep introspection to understand what went awry.
It’s clear that Allen isn’t going to argue that Toy Story 5 is merely a money-grabbing move, but it’s likely that finances did contribute to the film’s production. Instead of letting the Toy Story franchise fade away, Pixar used Lightyear as a means to sustain the brand and explore new territory (which seemed to have found a conclusion in Toy Story 3 and then again in Toy Story 4). Regrettably, this approach didn’t succeed, so the studio is now returning to the original set of toys that audiences adore. With a summer release date, there’s an expectation that Toy Story 5 can mirror the $1 billion success of its predecessors.
It’s worth noting that despite some doubts regarding the release of Toy Story 5, it’s significant to remember that Pixar typically takes a considerable amount of time between sequels. With seven years having passed since the debut of Toy Story 4, we can expect Toy Story 5 to be no exception. This extended period indicates a strong commitment from the creative team to develop a compelling narrative before proceeding, which is promising.
