Legendary broadcaster Greg Gumbel died Dec. 27 at the age of 78, his family confirmed to CBS News.
In a heartfelt message, Michelle and Marcy announced the passing of their treasured husband and father, Greg Gumbel. After a valiant fight against cancer, he passed away serenely, enveloped in love. Just as we would have anticipated, Greg faced his illness with the same composure, dignity, and optimism that characterized him.
The statement went on to say, “He leaves an enduring legacy of love, inspiration, and unwavering dedication spanning over 50 remarkable years in the sports broadcast industry. His distinctive voice will remain etched in our memories. Greg’s memory will be cherished forever by his family, closest friends, coworkers, and everyone who knew and loved him.
In addition, the head of CBS Sports, David Berson, expressed his respects in memory of the seasoned journalist following the news of his passing.
Greg Gumbel’s family at CBS Sports is deeply saddened by his passing, as stated by Berson. He was an exceptional man, unmatched in his grace among all television personalities. Our team who were fortunate enough to know him as a friend and coworker hold him in high esteem.

In 1989, Gumbel, who is the elder brother of a former co-host on ‘Today’, named Bryant Gumbel, commenced his career at CBS Sports. The subsequent year saw him taking up hosting duties for ‘The NFL Today’.
In his distinguished career, Gumbel was responsible not only for reporting on significant sports events but also for hosting the Super Bowl broadcasts and Olympic opening ceremonies for CBS on various occasions.
In 2022, Gumbel celebrated his milestone 50th year of broadcasting.
